  Simon was the second son of Simon and Cecily (Cecilia) d' Avranches. His father had died by 1203 when Cecily was recorded to have paid to remain single. Simon's brother William risked the family fortune by siding with the rebel barons in their fight against King John in the first Baron's War.
  
  Simon and his brother William married two of the de Bocland heiresses, Matilda and Joan. William died by 1233 and his estate was inherited by his daughter, another Matilda.
  
  Simon and his wife Joan had only one child who survived to adulthood, their son John. He married a woman known to us only as Amice. They had three daughters before he died. His children were given to Emery Bezill to control their estate and their marriages. The marriage of Amice was also given to Emery. Elizabeth d' Avanches, daughter of John was married to Matthew Bezill, nephew of Emery.
  
  Simon's land, brought to the marriage by his wife, included part of the manor of Radcot which he held from the King for 1/4 knights fee. Part of the manor of Grafton was held from the Priory of Noyon for 40 shillings. He also held part of the manor of Brompton Regis from the King for 1/4 knight's fee. This is quite a change from his father's land holdings valued at 21 knights' fees.
