Biography
Malcolm was born about 1185 probably son to Walter of Kettins.
About 1202 Adam son of Abraham of Lour granted to David Ruffus of Forfar a charter of a davach of Kincrey (Craichie?) and two davachs of the barony of Lour in Angus. Roger bishop of St Andrews was the principal witness and among the local lairds witnessing were Stephan of Blair and Malcolm of Kettins.[1]
Malcolm of Kettins witnessed a charter made by a neighbouring laird, Michael of Meigle about 1207 when Michael granted the monks of the Abbey of Coupar Angus all his right up to half of the marsh as far as his lands bordered on the south side with their lands on the north side to the lands called Fethincathie.[2]
About 1210 Malcolm of Kettins (de Ketenes) witnessed the charter of Stephen de Blair son of Waldeve for the salvation of the souls of the kings David, Malcolm and William and his father, mother, sisters and all kinsfolk.[3]
In 1212 William, bishop of St Andrews, granted to the Abbot and Convent of the Abbey of Coupar Angus the whole abthane of Airliefor a tack of twenty years reserving the cain of Sir Malcolm of Kettins and his heirs.Charters of the Abbey of Coupar Angus Vol.i Chrtr.XXI p.47
At Edinburgh, on 6 Dec 1213, Malcolm of Kettins witnessed an Agreement drawn up between Maurice, earl of Menteith and Maurice his younger brother.[4]
About 1220 William de Munfichet granted to the Abbey of Coupar Angus pasturage for cattle from Keithock and from the land near Campsie along with other gifts. This charter was witnessed by Malcolm of Kettins.
Malcolm appears to have had a daughter:
Mary mar. Sir John Fenton of Baikie
Mary's son, Sir William Fenton made a donation to the Abbey for the salvation of the souls of his parents and Malcolm of Kettins and his brother John who were his ancestors.[5]
Robert, king of Scots, about 1314 granted to Patrick of Ogilvy, for his homage and service, all that land of the barony of Kettins called ‘le Bordland’, as it was in the time of the late Malcolm of Kettins.[6]
