*********************************************************
During the reign of David the 2nd from 1330 down to 1370 they are constantly styled. Crichton dominus existem (?) and in the reign of James the 1st from 1423 to 1427 appear to have become the personal friends, or ministers of their Sovereigns.
In the reign of James the 11th', William Baron Crichton of Crichton anno 1438 became chancellor or Prince Minister of Scotland. It was under the patronage of this very eminent statesman that the Crichtons rose to the wealth & eminence which they held for nearly two centuries afterwards. He appears to have been a cautious but at the same time bold and daring statesman.
