seated at Honfleur, in Normandy, in the eighth century, —
three centuries before the conquest of England by Duke
William. At the battle of Hastings (1066) "Sire Run-
dolph de Gifford," was one of the Conqueror's standard-
bearers. Walter Gifford, Earl of Buckingham, was a cousin of the Conqueror. In the reign of Henry II. (1154-89) Sir Peter Gifford married Alice, daughter of
Sir Grey de Corbuchin."
