John I de Sutton: Additional Information
On 19 October 1325 by deed he made over the Castle and Manor of Dudley to Hugh le Despenser, extorted from him while in prison. This grant was cancelled in 1327 and the property restored to him.

Held castle in right of his wife. In 1322 it was ordered that Dudley Castle be delivered to Margaret de Somery and her husband with various lands "of late of the said John (de Somery) tenant in chief." These lands included the castle at 4L 6s 8d a year, the town of Dudley extended at 41L 6s 9d a year; and Pensnett Chase, extended at 64L 0s 10d. Sir John alienated the castle and manor of Dudley to Hugh le Despencer by deed 19 Oct 1325 but this grant extorted from him while in prison, was cancelled in 1327 on the accession of Edward III and his property restored.

Sir John de Sutton, eldest son of Sir Richard de Sutton and Lady Isabella Patrick, had served as a knight under John de Somery, his wife's brother, who died without issue, leaving the lands and titles, and Dudley Castle to John de Sutton, in right of his wife. Sir John lated deeded the Manor of Dudley to Hugh le Despencer on 19 Oct 1325. However, because this deed was forced from him while in prison, in 1327 King Edward III cancelled the deed and the property was restored to the Sutton Dudleys.

Dates conflict. Lord of Dudley Castle, Staffordshire, England. Todmar.net says he was Lord of the castle from 1326 and died about 1359. Sources sited in this geneology are from RootsWeb. Horrocks. Todmar states he was engaged in wars in Scotland from 1316-1320. He was accused fo complicity in the rebellion of Thomas Earl of Lancaster against the king, and was extorted to give up all his right and interest in the castle and town of Dudley to Hugh le Despencer. In addition he gave up the manors of Sedgley, Swinford, and Rowley-Somery, as well as other lands, not obtaining restitution until Edward III became king. He was knighted in 1326, according to Todmar.

Lord of Dudley in right of his wife in 1326. Was dead by 1338. Sir John was the first Baron of Dudley of the Suttons. He assisted Thomas, Earl of Lancaster against the ministers of Edward II and to save his life, had to convey all right and title in the castle and manor of Dudley and otherlarge estates to Hugh le Despenser, minister of Edward II but in the first year of Edward III (1325) they were restored.

Sir John Sutton, Knight, married Margaret de Someri and i n her right was Lord Dudley. She was daughter of Roger de S omeri and sister and co-heir of John de Someri. It was thro ugh her the Suttons acquired the Castle of Dudley and consi derable estates, including the Manor of Seggesley Chase o f Pennalt, the manor of New Synford-Regis, County Stafford , as also the town of Dudley. He took the arms of de Someri : Or two lions passant in pale azure. These being the origi nal arms of Fitz-Ansculph. whose daughter, Beatrix, marrie d Fulke Paganel. A grant was extorted from Sir John Sutto n by which he passed away by deed, bearing date at Westmins ter 19th of Oct., 19 of Edward II, all his right and titl e to the castle and manor of Dudley to Hugh le de Spenser , but this grant thus made being extorted from him when i n prison, and in fear of his being put to death. it was can celled upon accession of Edward III and the property restor ed.
=== Dudley Estates ===
With the death of John de Somery in 1322 the extensive estates of the Barony of Dudley entered into a period of confusion and disputed ownership. Only in 1327, did John de Sutton, after imprisonment in the Tower of London and the extraction of a forced disclaimer to the property, eventually inherit the family estates of his wife Margaret de Somery.

Warsop and Ekering. The manors, excepting the advowsons of the churches, held for life of John de Sutton by his demise and with reversion to him and his heirs, service unspecified.
Ekering. 10 marks rent from tenants of John de Stirchesle, held of the said John de Stirchesle with condition that if the said John de Stirchesle, or his heirs shall pay 40 marks within four years from the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last, the said rents shall revert to him and his heirs, but if not, they shall remain to the said John de Somery and his heirs.
His sisters, Margaret the wife of John de Sutton, aged 30, and Joan late the wife of Thomas Botetourte [alias de Buttetourt], aged 29, are his [next] heirs.

Honesworth. The manor, a member of Duddele (extent given), held of the king in chief.
Mere. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief at fee farm by service of rendering 10l. at the king’s exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.

John Sutton of Dudley Castle, co. Stafford s. and h. of John de Sutton, also of Dudley Castle, in right of his wife Margaret, da. of Roger de Somery, of the same (which Margaret was the eldest of the two sisters and coheirs of John, Lord Somery [1308-21] also of Dudley Castle afsd.) was b. probably about 1310 his mother being aged 32 in 1321) ; suc. his father (who had been restored to the Dudley estate in 1327 which two years before had been aliened to the Despencer family) some date after 1329, and was sum. to Parl. as a Baron (LORD DUDLEY or SUTTON DE DUDLEY) by writ. 25 Feb. (1341/2), 16 Ed III. Directed "Johanni de Sutton de Duddely" which writ tho' he lived 17 years afterwards, was never repeated. He m. before 1329, Isabella, da. of John (de Cherleton), Loud Cherleton feudal Lord of Powis, by Hawyse, sister and h. of Griffin AP Owen styled De La Pole also feudal Lord of Powis. He d. 23 Nov. 1359. Inq. post mortem 10 and 14 Jany. 1359/60, and 10 May 1360. His widow m. before 1360 Sir Richard Dudley, who, by the courtesy of England, styled himself (1360) "Seigneur de Dudley" and who was living 1377. She d. at an advanced age 10 April 1397, having outlived both her son and grandson. Inq. post mortem 6, 14, and 24 Feb. 1400/1.
