Pirou. [1]
Parents
Robert de Pirou, born, say, 1100, was the earliest known tenant of the manor of Furnax or Avenel's Fee in Warminster, Somerset, under the Malet family. It was said late in the 12th century that he had received land in Warminster and the chuch there by gift of Henry I. (1100-[2]
Robert was steward to the Earl Ferrers early in the reign of Henry II, [3]and a tenant under him in Derbyshire. [4]
Robert was still living in 1172, [5] but probably died soon after.
He left a son William. [1]
William was the son of Robert de Pirou.[6]
Warminster
Some popular genealogies refer to "Warminster, Somerset. Note that " there's also Worminster (pronounced Warminster) near Shepton Mallet, Somerset, which is not far from Milton Clevedon." (G2G)
Kilve, Somerset
Kilve is a village in the west of Somerset County. It had been held by Beorhtric and in 1086 by Roger de Courcelles. The church is St. Mary's. His estates passed mostly to the Malet family who became overlords, but a tenancy was established in the early 12th century, held by Robert de Pirou.[7]
The tenancy of Kilve was held later by Robert de Pirou's grandson, Robert, son of William. [7] At Robert's death, perhaps about 1200, Robert's heirs were his three daughters. The usual disputes followed, and Kilve was held by the Furneaux family, then the Avenels, then the Furneaux again who remained in possession until the failure of the male line in 1359. Thus Matthew de Furneaux was granted a market and a fair in 1296, and Simon de Furneaux established a chantry of five chaplains there in 1329.[7]
Death
The suggestion by the crsbi site that at the death of Robert de Pirou, Kilve was held by his grandson, suggests that Robert's son William died before his father, and that Robert FitzWilliam, the grandson, was thus the heir of Robert de Pirou.
Issue
William FitzRobert had two sons.
Ralph FitzWilliam was brobably the son of William FitzRobert. Ralph gave the church of Warminster to Wells Cathedral, [8]
Robert FitzWilliam. Apparently the heir, who inherited the Kilve manor from his grandfather Robert de Pirou.
William, the father of Ralph FitzWilliam, gave the church of Warminster to Wells Cathedral. [6]
