While there is little doubt about Thomas being a member of the de Hastings family who were his overlords in the manor of Gissing, there is doubt about exactly who his father was. Clark has him another generation further back, as a brother to Ralph and Hugh, but also admits to doubts about this.[[https://archive.org/stream/archaeologicalj02unkngoog#page/n174/mode/2up proposal] and [https://archive.org/stream/archaeologicalj02unkngoog#page/n294/mode/2up/search/hastings doubts]]
In the 1170s, a Thomas de Hastings appears in Pipe Rolls records for Norfolk and Hereford (the entries indicate it is the same person).
On 31 March 1182 a Thomas de Hastings appeared before the new Abbot ofSt. Edmund's, leading "his nephew Henry de Hastings", and demanded for him his hereditary office of dapifer of the Abbey. Jocelin of Brakelond informs us of this in his ''Chronicle'' of the Abbey.[Rokewood, J. G. (1840), Chronica Jocelini de Brakelonda, Camden (Latin edition). ([http://books.google.be/books?id=Mn9bAAAAIAAJ Google books link]; example of an English edition online at archive.org [https://archive.org/stream/thechronicleofjo00joceuoft#page/n9/mode/2up here],)] The name of the dapifer who had passed away is not mentioned in that record, but it is assumed to be William de Hastings, son of Hugh de Hastings, who had been dapifer at some time during the reign of Henry II (1154-1189).[Dugdale's Baronage]
Thomas, assumed to be the same man, received Gissing in Norfolk, whichwas one of the hereditary possessions of the dapifers, from John de Hastings (possibly another brother, or maybe an uncle, or nephew), and this gift was confirmed by Henry son of John de Hastings, (generally understood not to be the aforementioned nephew, who is thought to be the son of William de Hastings), to Hugh, the son of the said Thomas, at the end of the 12th century.[Several witnesses correspond to lieutenant dapifers of the Hastings family in the time of Abbot Samson ofBury: Miles de Hastig', Robert de Flammville, Gilbert de Hastig', William de Gertigham, Henry Sarac', William de Flammville, Adam de Corneburc, Walter de Manto', Bernard Burd', John de Baucam, Adam son of Michael, Thomas de Richebur', John de Hou'. It has been most recently beenreproduced in the Report on the Manuscripts of the late Reginald Rawdon Hastings, Esq. of the Manor House, Ashby De La Zouch by Francis Bickley (Historical Manuscripts Commission 78) p.206. For a list of lieutenant dapifers see Davis, R. H. C. (1954), The Kalendar of Abbot Samson of Bury St. Edmunds and Related Documents, page lxi.]
The date of Thomas' death is uncertain, but he was alive on 1 Apr 1182(above), and according to Moriarty, "certainly dead by 1195, and evidently before the accession of Richard I in 1189".[Moriarty, G. A. (1942), "The origin of the Hastings", New England Historical Genealogical Register, Vol.96.] However Thomas appears in Walter Rye's Calendar of old Norwich Feet of Fines 1196/1197: Thomas de Hasting in Frense, Tistehall, and Gissing.[ https://archive.org/stream/ashortcalendarf02ryegoog#page/n9/mode/2up/search/hasting] Moriarty appears to this he was dead by 1195 because this is when he believes the marriage of his son was contracted (see his proposed pedigree), but the source for this is not clear. Compare to the VCH for Allerston which says that her grandfather Thorphin may have lived to 1189, "when the custody of his heir Helen, daughter of his son Alan, with all his land inAllerston, with sac and soc and permission to keep greyhounds and brachets and hunt hares and foxes in the king's forests, was given to Alan de Valence."['Parishes: Allerston', in A History of the County of York North Riding: Volume 2, ed. William Page (London, 1923), pp. 421-424. British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/yorks/north/vol2/pp421-424 [accessed 15 June 2016].] For the marriage itself, Blomefield cited "Fin. Norf. H. 3. L. 5. N. 144." which mustrefer to a later time.[Francis Blomefield, 'Hundred of Diss: Gissing', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 1 (London, 1805), pp. 162-181. British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-hist-norfolk/vol1/pp162-181 [accessed 15 June 2016].]
The name of his wife is not known.
Thomas's son Hugh was in his prime in the 1190s, and was dead before 1203, and possibly before 1201.
The Hastings Earls of Huntingdon, who achieved prominence only many generations later, traced their ancestry back to a Hugh, son of Thomas de Hastings. They continued to possess the manor of Gissing for many generations.
