It is believed that a previous construction on site dates back to the 11th century , although the first official mention is in a document from 1316 . The most important construction campaign, however, took place between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 14th century, when Tommaso Malaspina inherited the castle and its fief from his mother Agnese, the last descendant of the Aleramic marquises of the Bosco . [1] The Malaspina moved there, leaving his residence in Molare .
The castle then passed in the sixteenth century to the Genoese families of Sauli and Centurione; it was also a fief of the Dorias . In the eighteenth century it became the property of the Genoese Serra. The castle is included in the system of " Open Castles " of Lower Piedmont .
