The Campbells arrived in Argyll as part of a royal expedition in c.1220. They settled on Lochaweside where they were placed in charge of the King’s lands in the area.
From Bruce’s time, the family headquarters had been the great castle at Innischonnell on Loch Awe, and remained so until the 1400’s when Sir Duncan Campbell (great grandson of Sir Colin) moved to Inveraray. He was created Lord Campbell and thereafter a steady string of titles were awarded to the family. His grandson was created Earl of Argyll in 1457.
Sir Gillespic Campbell of Menstrie died circa 1280.

If so then Malcolm must have lived in Glassary alongside of his brother Duncan. It has been conjectured with much probability that Malcolm must have married a daughter of the great Somerled, who held himself out as an independent monarch and cared little for the so-called Kings of Scotland. This theory has the merit of explaining the purely Norse name Laumon of their first-born, which is otherwise puzzling. If the mother was Somerled’s daughter she had already an uncle and a brother of that name.”

Sir Archibald Campbell, 5th Knight of Lochawe, 20th Chieftain of Argyll

Malcolm Campbell, 5th Laird (1250–1290), 5th Chieftain
Sir Dugald Campbell, 6th Laird (1272-????), 6th Chieftain
Sir Dugald Campbell, 7th Laird (1300–1350), 7th Chieftain
Christina Campbell (b.1323), 8th Chieftain
The 7th Laird had left only one daughter, Christine Campbell (b. 1323). Her weakness and imprudence caused the majority of the estate to be resigned to the Knight of Lochawe, who took advantage of her. She was left with only a small portion of the upper part of Craignish under his superiority. The nearest male representative - Ronald Campbell - was a nephew of her grandfather, and he fought hard to win back his heritage. The then Chief of Clan Campbell was obliged to allow him possession of a considerable portion of the estate, but retaining the superiority, and inserting a condition in the grant that if there was ever no male heir in the direct line the lands were to revert automatically to the Argyll family.
