=== Life Sketch ===
Son of Gilbert de Saint Leger (1120-1175), chevalier (Knight)
He accompanied Richard I to Palestine for the third Crusade, taking a distinguished part in the siege of Acre in 1187. He was in the Holy Land for 15 years. He returned to England around 1201. His tomb still exists in Ulcombe Church.
Note on All Saints Parish Church of Ulcombe:
All Saints, built of Kentish ragstone, is a fine buildif Norman origin. It is larger than would be expected in a small village due to the fact that a College of priests was established at Ulcombe by Archbishop Stephen Langton around the time of the Magna Carta, on the petition of Ralph St. eger, and alterations were made to the structure to reflect the importance of the College. _FA1: Patron of Ulcombe Church Note: A member of the jury of the Grand Assize in King John's reign. Ulcombe Church ============= A church has stood here since Norman times and legend has it the William the Conqueror once stood on the site of the church and gave orders for its erection. The church, of Kentish ragstone, is larger than one might expect in a small village. The explanation for this lies in the fact that ulcombe was a collegiate church, established between 1213 and 1215 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton on the petition of Ralph St. Leger. He requested that a college be set up to serve God and the Blessed Virgin Mary 'in perpetue'. The first priests, chosen by Ralph, were Abricus, the Archpriest, and John and William, Canons. The priests were to live a communal life, wear white surplices and black copes 'in the mannor of Canons'. and to hold no property except gifts from their families. The North Chapel, known as the St. Leger Chapel, was built in the Tudor period, and contains a St. Leger memorial window. The screen which divided it from the chancel dates for the 15th century. It was probably once part of the Rood Screen - the loft to which was approached by the steps which can still be seen in the south wall. The font is of 19th century origin. The Brasses, which are to be found in this chapel are very fine. One of Rudolph St. Leger and his wife is dated 1470; another is believed to be of John St. Leger who died in 1442; and the third is of William Maydeston, Knight, and is dated 1419. The Yews, in the churchyard are very ancient. Measured in 1956 by E W Swanton, author of Yew Trees of England, he estimated the one near the entrance to be 1,000 years old and the one near the south chapel wall 750 years.
