WALTER [II] de Dunstanville (-[1195]). The 1155/56 Pipe Roll records "Waltero de Dunestanuill" being pardoned Danegeld in Sussex[208]. “Walter de Dunstanvill” confirmed his parents’ donation of land of Niwetimbre to St. Pancras by undated charter, witnessed by “Robert de Dunstanvill”[209].
Henry II King of England confirmed property "Cutiford" to the priory of Furleigh, donated by "Walterus de Dunst. et Alanus frater eius" for the soul of "Roberti de Dunst avunculi sui", by charter dated to [1166/69][210].
The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "Walterus de Dunstanville iii m" in Sussex in [1167/68][211]. The 1176/77 Pipe Roll names "Waltero de Dunestanuill…in Colinton" in Devonshire, "Walterus de Dunestanuill" in Shropshire, and "Waltero de Dunestanuill…in Hichtredeberia" iand "de Brocton" in Wiltshire[212].
[m firstly URSULA, daughter of RENAUD [de Dunstanville] Earl of Cornwall & his wife Beatrice FitzWilliam. Her parentage and marriage are included in a manuscript pedigree of Dunstanville, probably dated to [1461/1509], based on an alleged mandate of King John which asserts that in [1196/97] "Reginald late Earl of Cornwall…acknowledged that a moiety of the manor of Colern and a third part of the manor of Addersley" in Wiltshire "were the right of Walter de Dunstanville and Ursula his wife, daughter of the said earl, father and mother of Walter de Dunstanville now living"[213].
Eyton highlights that the document does not exist in any of the surviving rolls of King John and describes it as "a detestable forgery", pointing out that Renaud Earl of Cornwall died in 1175.]
[m secondly ---. .No direct proof of this supposed second marriage has been found. However, the claim by Walter [II]’s widow Sibylla against Thomas Basset for her dower suggests that she may not have been the mother of Walter’s son Walter [III]. This suggestion appears reinforced by Sibylla’s claim in 1228/1229 (see below), also brought against representatives of the Basset family, in relation to which the limited source material available makes no mention of Walter [III].]
m [thirdly] as her first husband, SIBYLLA, daughter of --- (-after 1230). She married secondly Enguerrand des Préaux. Her two marriages are confirmed by Bracton who records a claim, dated 1220, by "Engelramus de Pratellis…et Sibilla uxor eius" against "Thomam Basset" [son of Alice de Dunstanville, see below] for "terciam partem de Colintona…dotem ipsius Sibille et Walterus de Dunstanuilla quondam vir suus"[214].
Kennett notes the “trial at law in the fourteenth of Henry III [Oct 1229/Oct 1230]” between “Sibilla de Ferrers widow of Walter son of Walter Dunstanvil” and “William Longespe and Idonea his wife, grand-daughter and heir to the estate of Gilbert Basset”[215]. No precise extract of documents relating to this lawsuit has been found (in particular no record was found in Bracton’s Note Book[216]), but the fact of the lawsuit is confirmed by the Close Rolls which include proxies given by “Sibilla de Ferrariis” to sue William Longuespee and Idonia relating to “terre in Scaldeford et Alfold” in Surrey, dated 1228[217]. The connection between Sibylla and the Ferrers family has not been ascertained: was she née Ferrers, or did she marry a third husband from the Ferrers family? Walter [II] & his [second] wife had one child:
