=== Life Sketch ===
About Thor Longus of the Merse (Ednam), Lord of Tippermuir & Superior Lord of the lands of Crawford in Upper Clydesdale
Lord of Tippermuir and Superior Lord of the lands of Crawford in Upper Clydesdale, who settled in Scotland between 1069-1074
"The House of Crawford considers all those surnamed Crawford as descended from a common ancestor. The name Crawford or Craufurd is derived from the Barony of Crawford in Lanarkshire.
the House acknowledges as its progenitor the 1Anglo-Danish chief Thorlongus (Thor the tall) who is most closely identified with the Merse in Southern Scotland, a marshy area west of Berwick and north of the River Tweed. Thorlongus also held lands in Northumbria. He fled to Scotland in the winter of 1068-9 when William the Conqueror ravaged Northumbria. Thorlongus served under Malcom Cadmore during the Dano-Scottish war with William the Conqueror. He was granted lands in Ednam by King Edgar around 1107. Thorlongus is known in documents located in Durham Cathedral Archives as the Overlord of Crawford. "

Thor Longus Biography
In the Merse, around 1090, begins our family's history in Scotland. Thorlongus was given undeveloped lands in a place called Ednam, just north of Kelso, to develop and populate. By early 12th century,
=== Thor is the name of the first known ance ===
Thor is the name of the first known ancestor of that family who, at a later date, derived their surname from the lands of Ruthven in Perthshire. Thor, whose name suggests a Scandinavian origin, flourished during the reign of King David I. The name was not uncommon at the period, but he was probably identical with Thor, son of Swein (or Swan), who appears as a witness to royal charters between 1127 and 1150. He was the owner of the lands of Travernent or Tranent, the church of which he granted to the monks of Holyrood. He was also not improbably the overlord of the extensive territory of Crawford. He may have been a friend as well as a contemporary of Henry, Earl of Huntingdon, who is commemorated in a charter by Swan, son of Thor, to the monks of Scone. [The Scots Peerage IV:254]
