2. Raul de Pomerai fl. 1086. Founder of Britain's noble house of Pomeroy, with a manse that remained in the family over 500 years. Ralph de Pomeroy was at the Battle of Hastings. His home domain was at La Pommeraie in Bayeux, Normandy. Earthworks of his Castle still remain near Falaise called the Chateau Ganne. He was granted 60 manors by Duke William, many in Devonshire. His chief domain in Devon was at Berry Pomeroy. Joselin Pomeroy succeeded him. Through Henry, his son, they retained their estates in Normandy at the Castle of Pont-Antou. Either this same Henry, or his son, supported King John of Magna Carta fame and held the Castle Pomeroy at his disposal and garrisoned it. The wealth of the Pomeroy estate was large and in the Exon Domesday he held many livestock in the northern part of the county. In the mid sixteenth century the castle and estates went to the Seymours, Dukes of Somerset and the main line became extinct. Junior branches were at Ingeston and Sandridge, and in southern Ireland by the Viscounts Harberton.

Radulphus De Pomeraie (Ralf-Ralph) of La Pomeraie in Normandy. He was an officer of rank in the army of William the Conqueror and came over with him when he conquered England.
=== Although sons of Roger Chievre and Petro ===
Although sons of Roger Chievre and Petronilla, brothers Raul (Ralph) and Hugue were identified by the surname "de la Pommeraei" meaning "of the apple orchard." This practice was not uncommon, as the formal use of "father to son" surnames was just coming into usage in Europe during this period. Ralph’s surname was derived from la Pommeraie, the family.s place of residence at la
Pommeraye, 14 kilometres west of Falaise, Calvados, Normandy. The designation "de la Pommeraei" was probably applied to Ralph for the purpose of identification only.
Raul (Ralph) was the founder of Britain's noble house of Pomeroy, with a an estate that remained in the family for over 500 years.
Ralph de la Pomerai is recorded in 1066 in the Battle Rolls at Falaise as being one of the knights with William the Conqueror . Related is a bronze tablet over the entrance to the Church of Dives (St. Pierre-sur-Dives), near Caen, in Normandy, which contains the names of about 500 'companions of William the Conqueror'. Dives was the starting point for part of William's fleet. The first church was built here in 1012 by Countess Lesceline, William the Conqueror's aunt. The Dives list was compiled in 1866, for the 800th anniversary of the Conquest, by Lepold Delisle. The tablet contains about 500 names, including Guillaume La Chevre and Raoul de La Pommeraie. There is a similar bronze memorial in the chapel of the castle of Falaise in Normandy (Faliase is the birthplace of William the Conqueror). This list (the 'Falaise Roll') contains 315 names, and the memorial was erected in 1931. This list again contains brother Guillaume (William) Le Chievre and Raoul de La Pommeraie.
In 1068 he is recorded as taking part in the siege of Exeter. Awarded 58 manors in Devon including Berry Pomeroy, plus two in Somerset by the time of Ralph's his death in around 1102 his estate was the fifth largest baronial landholding in Devon.
In the mid sixteenth century the castle and estates went to the Seymours, Dukes of Somerset and the main line became extinct. Junior branches were at Ingeston and Sandridge, and in southern Ireland by the Viscounts Harberton.
The 'Terra Radvlfi De Pomerei' included 60 manors, most in Devonshire, the remainder in Somerset. This estate remained in the possession of the Pomeroy family for over 500 years.
