TAKEN FROM Find A Grave Memorial# 48321804
Mary Foote, dau. of the immigrant Nathaniel Foote and wife Elizabeth Deming, b. circa 1623 at Colchester in Essex, England. Stiles in Ancient Wethersfield claims she was still living in Aug. 1685 at Norwich, Conn., but no record is available to confirm that statement. It is assumed she was interred at Wethersfield where all of her children resided, but there is no known gravestone to confirm this.
In circa 1643 at Wethersfield, Conn., Mary m. 1) John Stoddard, whose date of birth and origins are unknown. He d. intestate at Wethersfield in Dec. 1664, the inventory of his estate taken Dec. 20, 1664. They had the seven children outlined in their father's memorial.
Following John Stoddard's death, Mary m. 2) on or after Apr. 4, 1674 as his 2nd wife, the immigrant settler John Goodrich. The aforementioned date is when Goodrich executed an ante-nuptial agreement, in which £180 in lands and other property were to be handed to him upon marriage to Mary. If Goodrich died before Mary, "she should receive back all the said land and property, and also £4 per year out of his own proper estate, and that if any of said estate and property should have been disposed of, the value of same should be made good to her" out of certain designated meadow lands at Wethersfield. This contract was witnessed, Apr. 4, 1674, by Josiah Churchill, Joseph Wright [her son-in-law] and Hugh Wells.
John Goodrich was b. before 1617 prob. at Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, England. At the time of his marriage to Mary, he had six living children, age 15 and older, by his first wife. He d. testate before Apr. 6, 1680, the date his June 9, 1672 dated will was probated as well as his estate inventory was presented at court by his widow Mary. Mary is not mentioned in Goodrich's will since her marriage to Goodrich occurred nearly two-years after he wrote his will. She was, however, distributed the larger part of the movable estate, probably including part of the property she delivered at marriage per the ante-nuptial agreement. There were no children by this marriage.
Mary then m. 3) as his third wife, Lieut. Thomas Tracy of Norwich, Conn. Prior to his death, Tracy presented an undated account regarding Mary's unpaid annual legacy from the estate of her previous husband, claiming on behalf of his wife that monies were due her. Lieut. Tracy died intestate Nov. 7, 1685 at Norwich. His estate was appraised at £560 and included about 5,000 acres of land, most of which was located at Preston and Windham, Conn. The court ordered distribution of his estate only to his children and as no mention is made of Mary, the inference has been that Mary (Foote)(Stoddard)(Goodrich) Tracy deceased before Nov. 1685. There were no children of this third marriage.
It is not surprising as to why Mary came to marry who she did as her last two husbands. In April 1651 at Wethersfield, John Harrison, Thomas Wright [father of Mary's future son-in-law Dea. Joseph Wright], John Saddler, John Stoddard [Mary's husband] and John Goodrich [Mary's 2nd husband], all owned lots in the same area of northeast Wethersfield known as Pennywise. They executed a written agreement in which they said their "house lots are surrounded every winter and spring with water," so that they "could not have any profit in the middle of their lots." They therefore agreed that the lots were to be ditched, the expense to be born by themselves exclusive of John Stoddard, whose lot was "hie and dry," but had to be traversed by the ditch in question. [re: Stile's Ancient Wethersfield]. Lieut. Thomas Tracy was a resident of Wethersfield prior to 1640. In 1662, John Stoddard bought the land of Lieut. Tracy at Pennywise, who had since relocated to Norwich.
Inscription:
Mary is assumed to be interred at Wethersfield. At the time of her death the Wethersfield Village Cemetery was the only cemetery at Wethersfield. If she had a gravestone by 1899 it no longer existed.
