[Crystal Hatch Around 1500 the towerknown as the House or Place of Ruthven (after 1600 known as Huntingtower)was built and shortly thereafter a second, larger tower with attachedchamber-block was constructed only 3 m west of it. Each tower would thenhave formed a self-contained residence with its own separate entrance;and it seems quite possible that they would have housed respectively thefamilies fo the first Lord Ruthven and of his eldes son, William, themaster of Ruthven, who with his brother, John Lindsay, received adivision of the lands of Ruthven from his father in July 1480. The wallpaintings in both towers also date to thie period, and would have beenexecuted before 1513, when the master and his sister's husband, JohnErskine (whose arms appear in one of them), were both killed at Flodden. The ceiling paintings in the eastern tower date to c.1540. [Huntingtower,p. 2-3] William was created first Lord Ruthven by James III in January1487. Lord Ruthven's first wife was Isabel Lindsay, who had alreadyproduced for him two sons. These boys, William, the master of Ruthven, and John, were granted letters of legitimisation and a division of thelands of Ruthven in July 1480. [Huntingtower, p. 5]
