=== Howard is the name of a distinguished En ===
Howard is the name of a distinguished English family, politically powerful in the 16th century and headed since then by the dukes of Norfolk, the premier dukes of England in numbers of titles held. The Duke of Norfolk is the earl marshal and chief butler of the realm and is responsible for arranging state events such as coronation. John Howard, created 1st Duke by Richard III in 1483 was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field. His son Thomas (1443?-1524), who had also supported Richard, was imprisoned and deprived of his honors by Henry VII. But Thomas was soon released and, in 1501, became one of Henry's councillors, a position he retained under Henry VIII. Primarily a soldier, Thomas commanded the English forces in their victory over the Scots at Flodden, with the result that in 1514 he was made earl marshal and his title as 2d Duke was restored. He was loyal enough to preside in 1521 at the trial of his son-in-law's father, the Duke of Buckingham, andhumane enough to weep as he proclaimed the death sentence. His son Thomas (1473-1554) succeeded as 3rd Duke. He served Henry VIII as a general and admiral and took the field in 1536 as the rebels in the Pilgrimage of Grace, ambitious-he married the daughter of Edward IV-he resented Thomas Cardinal Wolsey's political predominance and plotted his downfall, The folk thereafter was briefly Henry's mouthpiece uttering threats against Rome, until The Cromwell eclipsed him. Norfolk's encouragement of the flirtation between his niece Catherine Howard and the King contributed to Cromwell's fall, but the disaster of Catherine's marriage to the King soon seriously undermined Norfolk's intention. In January 1547 the indiscretion of the Norfolk's son Henry, Earl of Surrey, who found to have advertised his royal pretension quartering his arms with hose of Edward the Confessor, led to Surrey's Execution for -------- and Norfolk's imprisonment. The charges against Surrey, however, may have been a plot against the Duke. In a ny case, Norfolk's life was saved only by Henry VIII's death later in 1547. ------------in power in the succeeding reign mistrusted the Duke's religious conservatism and kep him in prison until the Roman Catholic Queen Mary Released him and restored his privileges. The 3rd Duke's grandson Thomas (15??-1527), who succeeded him, is noteworth ------- for his entanglement with Mary, Queen of Scotland. In 1568 he involved himself in a plan to marry the exiled Scottish queen and later in ----------- plots; as a result, he was executed for treason on 2 June 1572. Although he was believe to be Catholic and had shown sympathy toward Catholics, his declaration on the scaffold that he was never a papist is probably true. Other Howard redeemed the family ----------- Charles, 2d Lord Howard of Effingham (15??-1624), whose father, Lord William Howard, protected Elizabeth during his Sister Mary's reign, was an admiral in 1588, and his effective seamanship contributed to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The subsequent history of the family is of crypto-Catholicism and, later, of devout---------- adherence to Rome. Suffering under the civil-----abilities imposed on their faith, the Howard's played a less important part in national affairs than might have been expected.

[Graham-Smith01272003.GED] Sir Howard was rather lazy and never amounted to very much. The children were brought up poor despite the grandeur of the Howard lineage. The Howard clan was a big one. Lord Edmund had twenty-two brothers and sisters, although 6 of the children died very young and their names are not known. Jocasta (Joyce) Culpepper, gave birth to six or seven children before dying. By 1527 he found himself a widower for the second time. There were ten children in all in his keeping and as was a common practice he immediately started farming them out to various relatives. His daughter, Katherine, would find herself in the Lambeth household of her step-grandmother, Agnes, Duchess of Norfolk, which would eventually prove to be a fatal mistake.
