«b»Biography«/b»
Margaret Clyvedon (d. 05 Jan 1412) is the daughter of Sir John Clyvedon, (d. ante 1348) and Elizabeth. She married twice, and is buried next to her first husband.
«b»Marriage«/b»
Margaret married first Sir John de Sancto Laudo (St. Lo) who died in 1375, and subsequently Sir Peter de Courtenay who died in 1405.
Beltz (1841) and Hope (1901), assert that Peter Courtney died unmarried. Lewis (2013), disputes this, but doesn't cite a source. The entry appears related to Weaver & Mayo's (1896), claim that Peter married Margaret Clyvedon, based on escheats and Hutchinson's "History of Dorset." They go into her relationship with her first husband and their children. Richardson (2011), agrees with Weaver & Mayo (1896), that Margaret remarried to Peter Courteney, but dates the marriage prior to 1390. That there was such a marriage is confirmed by the following.
Peter's i.p.m., (Feb. 7, 1405) specifically mentions "Margaret his wife who survives him" in whose right he was seized of the manors of Maiden Newton in Dorset, the manor of Pennington in Hampshire, and the manor of Little Cheverell in Wiltshire with the advowson of church and chantry. "The jury found that Sir Peter held, in right of Margaret his wife, who was still surviving...with remainder, after the decease of Margaret his wife, to William Botreaux, son of Elizabeth, daughter of the said Margaret, by John de Sancto Laudo, her former husband."
Margaret's own i.p.m., while under the name "Margaret widow of John de Sancto Laudo, Knight" mentions that she had been "the wife of Peter Courteney, knight, her second husband, now deceased".
Margaret's will is under the name "Lady Margaret Courtenay."
m.1 Sir John de Sancto Laudo / St Loe (d. 08 Nov 1375).
«b»Issue: at least two children: «/b»
1.) Alexander (who predeceased his mother)
2.) Elizabeth, later wife of William Botreaux.
m. (after 08 Nov 1375 / bef. 1390) Peter Courteney, K.G. (1342 - 1405). No issue.
«b»Will«/b»
Margaret de Clyvedon Courtenay or Margaret Courtenay, Lady St Laudo, her will was dated 14 Nov 1411. I, Margaret de Cortenay.....make my will in this manner......the said vessels shall be bound to pray for the soul of Sir John de St. Loo, my late husband, for my soul, for the souls of St. John de St. Loo his father and Ella his consort ...
