=== Some background information and ancestry of Isabelle de Pilkington, wife of Thomas de Lathom ===
Robert de Lathom and Katherine de Knowesley were the parents of Thomas de Lathom “son and heir, aged 24, 18 Edward II (1324-25)”, suggesting Thomas was born in 1300-1301, and a daughter Johanna. Thomas de Lathom was married to Eleanor de Ferrers, daughter of Sir John de Ferrers. They were the parents of at least two sons: Sir Thomas de Lathom “son and heir” and Edward de Lathom “had Parbold by gift of his father and one-fourth of Wrightington by grant of his brother”.
Sir Thomas de Lathom married twice: (1) Isabella de Pilkington, daughter of Roger de Pilkington, (2) Johanna (Joan) de Venables “survived her husband”, daughter of Hugh de Venables. Records do not always agree which wife was the mother of the children of Sir Thomas de Lathom, but the Lathom pedigree in The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancashire assigns some of the children to the first wife Isabella de Pilkington. Those children are Thomas de Lathom “son and heir”, Edward de Lathom “died without issue”, and Isabel de Lathom “dau. and eventually heir, carried the Lathom estates and the representation of the family to the Earls of Derby”. Sir Thomas de Lathom “said to have died September 14, 40 Edward III (1367)”, but more probably September 17, 44 Edward III (1370)”.
The question here is concerning the first wife Isabelle de Pilkington and who her father is, since there appear to be several men named Roger de Pilkington in the records. From the history “Lathom of Lathom in Lancashire”, a second history “The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster” a Lathom pedigree in Lathom of Lathom in Lancashire, British History Online and a Pilkington pedigree in The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster [See documents in the Memories sections of the individual Pilkington family members], the following appears to be the correct ancestry for Isabelle de Pilkington: Isabelle, daughter of Roger de Pilkington, that I call Roger de Pilkington IV to differentiate him from the others of the same name, and Alice de Bury, daughter of Henry de Bury.
That also makes Isabelle the sister of Roger de Pilkington V. Roger de Pilkington IV is the son of Roger de Pilkington III and his wife Margery whose surname is not given in the historical records except to say she is of Barton and of Crompton and apparently held a portion of each of those manors.
Roger de Pilkington III is apparently the son of Alexander de Pilkington, that I call Alexander de Pilkington II, and his wife Alice. Some private records suggest that Alice has the surname of de Chetham, but historical records do not confirm that supposition. It may or may not be a correct surname. Alexander de Pilkington’s mother was a de Chetham, but that doesn’t mean his wife was also a de Chetham. Alexander de Pilkington II is apparently the son of Roger de Pilkington II and his wife Ellen de Chetham, sister of Sir Geoffrey de Chetham and through whom the manors of Chetham and Crompton descended to her son Alexander de Pilkington II.
Roger de Pilkington II is apparently the son of Alexander de Pilkington I. Some private records suggest Alexander de Pilkington’s wife is Ursula Worsley, but historical records do not confirm that supposition. It may or may not be correct. Alexander de Pilkington I is apparently the son of Roger de Pilkington I and his wife, identified in historical records as the daughter of Sir Thomas Holcroft, but her first name is not given.
Roger de Pilkington I is the son of Sir Thomas de Pilkington and his wife Isabel Warren of Poynton, daughter of Sir John Warren of Poynton. Roger de Pilkington I is also the younger brother of another Sir Thomas de Pilkington whose pedigree continues in the Pilkington Pedigree in The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster without a continuation of the pedigree of Roger de Pilkington I, his brother.
The first Sir Thomas de Pilkington (father of Thomas de Pilkington and Roger de Pilkington) is the brother and heir of Sir Edmund de Pilkington, who died without any children, and both are sons of Leonard de Pilkington, Lord of Pilkington “in 10 Hen. I” (in the tenth year of the reign of King Henry I or in 1110). Some private records suggest Leonard de Pilkington is the son of another Leonard de Pilkington, but historical records do not confirm that supposition.
If the above analysis is correct, it accounts for approximately 250 years of the ancestry of Isabelle de Pilkington, wife of Thomas de Lathom, from about 1080, the birth of Leonard de Pilkington, to about 1330, the birth of Isabelle de Pilkington, and contains some nine generations of the Pilkington family along with the identities of several of their wives.
