  Alexander Keith of Grandown was the 3rd son of Sir William Keith, 12th Marischal of Scotland, and his wife Margaret Fraser Keith of Touchfraser. His parents married about 1347 (certainly before 1351). Alexander is believed to have been born about 1357/1358 at Dunotter Castle, seat of Clan Keith, in Kincardineshire, Scotland. Alexander had 2 older brothers John and Robert so did not become Marischal of Scotland but did become Lord of Grandown.
  Between 1391 and 1403 Alexander married Marjory Stewart, daughter of King Robert II of Scotland and widow of John Dunbar, Earl of Moray. Alexander and Marjory had one child, a daughter they named Christian. Christian married Patrick Ogilvy, son of Alexander Ogilvy, Sheriff of Angus.
