ALICE de Dunstanville (-after 1186). Oswald Barron names Alice as daughter of Alan [II] de Dunstanville and records her marriage to Thomas Basset (no sources cited)[250].
Assuming that “avunculus” is used in the following document in the strict sense of maternal uncle, her parentage is confirmed by a charter dated 20 Mar 1200 under which King John confirmed the grant of "manerium de Scaudeford", which "fuit Walteri de Dunestanvill [=Walter [II]] avunculi sui, sic jus et liberum maritagium Aelic matris ipsius Gilberti", to her son "Gilberto Basset"[251].
The Victoria County of History of Surrey records that Robert de Wateville is “said to have sold” the manor of Shalford to Robert [II] de Dunstanville (undated, but presumably early in the reign of Henry II)[252], while Walter [II]’s holding of Shalford recorded in the 20 Mar 1200 document would have been as Robert [II]’s heir if Robert had died childless.
The question is then complicated by Lysons’s Magna Britannia which says that Alice, wife of Thomas Basset, was the daughter of Robert [II] de Dunstanville, noting that King Henry II confirmed “the manors of Shalefeld and Aldeford, in Surrey, as having been the marriage-portion of his mother Alice Dunstanville” to her son Gilbert Basset[253].
Lysons cites Kennett, who also says that Alice was Robert’s daughter and notes the resulting “trial at law in the fourteenth of Henry III [Oct 1229/Oct 1230]” between “Sibilla de Ferrers widow of Walter son of Walter Dunstanvil” and “William Longespe and Idonea his wife, grand-daughter and heir to the estate of Gilbert Basset”[254].
Further information is found in the Victoria County of History of Surrey which records that Robert de Wateville is “said to have sold” the manor of Shalford to Robert [II] de Dunstanville (undated, but presumably early in the reign of Henry II)[255], and that “Walter de Dunstanville [=Walter [II]] gave the manor with his sister Alice in marriage” before repossessing it himself, whereupon Gilbert Basset, son of Alice, obtained a confirmation from King John (citing the same 20 Mar 1200 charter which is recorded above)[256].
This reference to Alice being Walter [II]’s sister does not amount to further evidence if it is based only on the wording of the 20 Mar 1200 document, as appears likely. However, as noted above, the text of that document suggests that Walter had held the Surrey properties himself, which is consistent with his having been Robert [II]’s heir (and therefore with Robert dying childless). The Surrey Victoria County History also cites “the continued suits by a certain Sybil” who it says was “said to have been the second wife of Walter de Dunstanville.
She appears first as Sibyl wife of Ingram de Pratellis and afterwards as Sibyl Ferrars”[257]. No precise extract of documents relating to these lawsuits has been found (in particular no record was found in Bracton’s Note Book[258]), but the fact of the lawsuits is confirmed by the Close Rolls which include proxies given by “Sibilla de Ferrariis” to sue William Longuespee and Idonia relating to “terre in Scaldeford et Alfold” in Surrey, dated 1228[259].
Without further documentation, it is impossible to determine if the lawsuit documents actually did record Alice as the daughter of Robert [II]. Until more information emerges, Alice is shown here as the sister of Walter [II] which appears consistent with the wording of the 20 Mar 1200 document. m THOMAS Basset [I] of Headington, Oxfordshire, son of --- (-after [1180/82]).
