He was Armor bearer and aide to King Robert the Bruce who by Charter dated at on Tweed, February 1323 granated him a large portion of the royal Forest of Drum, and by a later Charter, erected it into a Free Barony. Robert the Bruce is also said to have bestowed upon him the crest and motto used aby himself.
