  Gilbert Brereton was a younger son of Sir Ralph Brereton, of Brereton, kt, and (in some pedigrees) Ada, daughter of David earl of Huntingdon, relict of Henry Hastings. His parents had an older child, Sir William Brereton of Brereton who married the daughter of Richard de Sonbach, kt.
  
  Gilbert married and had two children, Henry and Sibilla. Sibilla married William, son of Adam de Bouths, of Withenshaw.
