Marie created an edit to this historical account. It is her opinion that: THIS ACCOUNT OF THE BODRUGAN FAMILY CONTAINS ERRORS AND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH CAUTION.
IT INCORRECTLY STATES THAT HENRY BODRUGAN THE SON OF OTTO, AND HIS WIFE ISABELLE WHALESBOROUGH, HAD 3 SONS: WILLIAM, OTTO & NICHOLAS. THIS IS WRONG. THE 3 SONS WERE IN FACT HIS BROTHERS. HENRY DIED, AGED 20, LEAVING NO ISSUE, HIS NEXT HEIR BEING HIS BROTHER WILLIAM. THIS IS CLEARLY EVIDENT FROM HENRY'S IPM
THIS IS AN EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE SOURCE, AT LEAST IN SO FAR AT IT RELATES TO THE BODRUGAN FAMILY.

- Title: Pedigree Charts in "The Genealogie or Pedegree" by Sir William Segar, Garter
Author: Book: Coles Of Devon, 1867 (25.html) by James Edwin-Cole Source 7:www Genealogy or pedegree of the .... Sir William Cole... written in 1630 by Segar, William, Sir, -1633
Publication: Name: http://ephotocaption.com/a/25/1391150.pdf;
Note: There are 33 pages of Charts of the Cole Family and the collateral lines drawn from the original Cole Pedigree dated 1585. This is copied from the original Roll, in the possession of the Right Honourable the Earl of Enniskillen.
This information was compiled by Sir William Segar, Garter in 1630, referencing the family of Thomas Cole who compiled the Escheats. William Segar, Garter was the Principall King of Armes. Wikipedia: Sir William Segar (c. 1554–1633) was a portrait painter and officer of arms to the court of Elizabeth I of England; he became Garter King of Arms under James I. He had the responsibility of granting coats of arms to noble families.
THE PEDIGREE AS IT RELATES TO THE BODRUGAN FAMILY CONTAINS ERRORS. Firstly, it incorrectly shows that Henry Bodrugan the son of Otto, and his wife Isabelle Whalesborough, had 3 sons: William, Otto & Nicholas. This is wrong. the 3 sons were in fact his brothers. Henry died, aged 20, leaving no issue, his next heir being his brother William. This is evident from Henry's IPM. Secondly, the pedigree conflates William the bastard son of Otto Bodrugan with William Bodrugan the son of Ralph Treneweth. This is an unreliable source in so far at it relates to the Bodrugan family.

Author: An edited (text-searchable) copy of "Coles of Devon...." by James Edwin-COLE at "http://ephotocaption.com/a/25/25.html" . It was edited by David KC COLE. The first edition of this book was written in 1630 by Sir William Segar, Knt, alias Garter. That book was titled "The Pedigree of the worthye captaine and Justiciar, Sir William Cole, of Eneskillen, Knight". Segar presented the results of his research in 15 pedigree charts. Source 7 contains pictures of the pages of Segar`s book in pdf format. The original copy is stored at the Family Search web site under the name Genealogie or pedigree of the Right Worshipfull and worthie Captaine Sir William Cole of the Castell of Eneskillen in the Countie of Firmanaugh in the Kingdome of Ireland Knight. In the book, the authors identify themselves as Sir William Segar, Garter, and William Penson, Lancaster. The original roll was written in 30 July 1630. Many documents were added to this roll and were privately printed all together in 1870. Segar

Note: The genealogist, suziestan, has recorded many members of this Cole family in Source 9, The Visitation of the County of Devon: COLE, ...
On pedigree page 8 we read that Thomas [of Wethouse] COLE [b. 1588] married Katheren, Da of John Warnett of Framfield in Sussex gentleman. Thomas of Wethouse COLE was born in 1588. He compiled the "ESCHEATS" (Source 23 & Source 24) now in the Harleian collection in the British Museum. He secondly married, on 15 May 1651, a daughter of James Preston of London. The Escheats (also known as the Harleian MSS) are an abstract of several inquisitions preserved in the Court of Wards, with indexes and names of families, towns, etc by Thomas COLE, 7 vols: Harleian MSS. 756,757.758,759,760,400, 411. The grandparents of Thomas COLE were Thomas COLE of London and Elizabeth Hargrave. The pedigree of Thomas COLE and his marriage to Katheren Warnett (Source 8) can be seen in the photo of part of pedigree 8 of Segar's book which follows: [chart includes William Cole who married Elizabeth Deards]...
In the 1800s, the information was updated by James Edwin-Cole. In 1867, he published a revised book named
The GENEALOGY of the FAMILY OF COLE of the county of DEVON
The above link, by Google Books, is a photocopy of that book.
Google also converted the photocopy to text format, but lack of editing, left many typographical errors. The author of this article, (David KC COLE), edited the text version of the book to correct most of the errors. The edited version of the book, in RTF format, is available here:
Coles of Devon (edited)
It is this version of the book that you need, if you wish to do text searches of information in the book.
David KC COLE, the author of this webpage, then analysed the book to create the family tree of the main COLE ancestors in the book. The family tree can be found here:
