  Robert was the only son of Robert, second earl of Leicester, and Amice (daughter of Ralph de Gael). He was born after a number of elder sisters. He inherited from his father large estates in England and Normandy.
  
  After 1154 he seems to have spent much of his time in charge of the Leicester lands in Normandy. By 1159 he had received from the king the marriage of Petronilla, daughter & heir of William de Grandmesnil.
  
  The seal he used before his father's death demonstrates that he had taken the surname de Breteuil. This has some significance in that it reveals him stressing his descent from William fitz Osbern.
  
  Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester (1168-1190) was an English nobleman, one of the principal followers of Henry the Young King in the Revolt of 1173-1174 against his father Henry II. He is also called Robert Blanchemains (meaning "White Hands" in French) and Robert Harcourt. Lord High Steward 1168-1190 [1].
  
  When the revolt of the younger Henry broke out in April 1173, Robert went to his castle at Breteuil in Normandy. The rebels' aim was to take control of the duchy, but Henry II himself led an army to besiege the castle; Robert fled, and the Breteuil was taken on September 25 or 26.
  
  Robert apparently went to Flanders, where he raised a large force of mercenaries, and landed at Walton, Suffolk, on 29 September 1173. He joined forces with Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, and the two marched west, aiming to cut England in two across the Midlands and to relieve the king's siege of Robert's castle at Leicester. However, they were intercepted by the king's supporters and defeated in battle at Fornham, near Bury St Edmunds, on 17 October. Robert, along with his wife and many others, was taken prisoner, according to legend, by Sir William Chamberlayne, Lord of North Riston and Petsoe. Henry II took away the earl's lands and titles as well.
  
  He remained in captivity until January 1177, well after most of the other prisoners had been released. The king was in a strong position and could afford to be merciful; not long after his release Robert's lands and titles were restored, but not his castles. All but two of his castles had been destroyed, and those two (Montsorrel in Leicestershire and Pacy in Normandy) remained in the king's hands.
  
  Robert had little influence in the remaining years of Henry II's reign, but was restored to favour by Richard I. He carried one of the swords of state at Richard's coronation in 1189.
  
  Robert took part in the third crusade and died at Durazzo (others say Dyrrachium), in 1190, probably at the end of August. He was buried in Leicester Abbey.

He was received however in royal favor in four years afterwards (1177), and had restoration of all his lands and castles, save the castle of Montsorel, in the co. of Leicester, and Pacey in Normandy; but surviving King Henry, he stood in such favor with Richard I., that those castles were likewise restored to him, and he was appointed to carry one of the swords of state at that monarch's coronation.   Robert de Beaumont is first mentioned in 1153. He received a charter making him "dapifer" of England and Normandy and a gift of lands formerly owned by William de Paci. In 1173 he supported Prince Henry in his revolt against his father, Henry II, and as a result the King confiscated Beaumont's English properties and burned the town of Leicester. At the time Robert was in Normandy in his fortress of Breteuil. The King appeared before Breteuil and captured and burned it. Robert fled before the siege began. He returned to England with a force of Flemish mercenaries and joined forces with Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. Their combined forces plundered Norwich, but they were defeated and captured at Fornham, Suffolk. Robert de Beaumont and his wife were taken to Normandy where they were imprisoned at Falaise. They negotiated peace, but not before Leicester Castle was destroyed.
  
  Robert de Beaumont is said to have gone a pilgrimage in 1179. In 1183 he was once more under suspicion and imprisoned. Again he was restored to favor and in 1189 carried one of the Swords of State at the coronation of Richard I. The following December he sent out on a crusade to Jerusalem, but died in Greece on his way home.

The charter is similar to one given at the same time to his father the Earl. About five years after his succession he appears to have refused to accept the old composition for the third penny of the pleas of the county, claiming that he ought to have the increased sum now paid for it. Unlike his predecessors, who had augmented their fortunes by adherence to the Crown, Robert took a rebellious course soon after he succeeded his father, by espousing the cause of the "young King" Henry, son of Henry II, when he revolted in 1173. The King at once confiscated Robert's English estates and attacked the town of Leicester, which was taken and burnt (28 July), while the castle held out. At that time Robert was in Normandy, having crossed in the spring and shut himself in his fortress of Bréteuil. On 8 August the King appeared before Bréteuil and captured and burnt it on 25 and 26 September, Robert having fled before the siege began.   Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicester (d 1190), baronial leader, was son of Robert de Beaumont, earl of Leicester, who died in 1168. He joined the rebellion against Henry II in favour of Prince Henry, which broke out in April 1173, and having obtained permission to visit Normandy, shut himself up in his castle of Breteuil. His English fiefs were confiscated in consequence, and an army sent against his town of Leicester, which was taken and burnt (28 july), with the exception of the castle, after a seige of three weeks. Henry II himself marched on Breteuil, 8 Aug, and (the earl having fled before him) captured and burnt the place on 25-6 Sept 1173. The earl is said to have been present at Gisors during the gruitles negotiations between the two kings, and to have upbraided Henry with his grievous losses. But this seems incompatible with the fact that he landed from Flanders, at Walton, Suffolk, 29 Sept 1173, at the head of a force of Flemings, and having been joined by Hugh (Bigo), earl of Norfolk, plundered Norwich, and besieged and took the castle of Hagenet on 13 Oct. Setting out for Leicester, he was intercepted at Fornahm, near Bury St Edmunds, by Richard de Luci and other supporters of the king (17 Oct), and taked prisioner, with his wife. They were sent over to Henry and imprisoned by him at Falaise, till his return to England, 8 July 1174, when he brought them with him. Meanwhile the earl's eastellan had broken forth from Leicester, and ravaged the country round, and Henry now (31 July 1174) extorted the surrender of his castles, Leicester, Mountsorrel, and Groby. The king took his prisoners back with him to Normandy on 8 August, but by the treaty with Louis on 30 Sept 1174, the earl's liberation was provided for. His castle of Leicester was, however, demolished, and it was not till January 1177 that in the council of Northampton he was restored in blood and honours, and his castles (except Mountsorrel( returned to him. He accompanied the king to Normandy in the summer, but is not again heard of till the spring of 1183, when, with the earl of Gloucester, he was arrested and imprisoned. He was, however, in attendance on the king at Christmas 1186, when he kept his court at Guildford, and on the accession of Richard (July 1189) he was completely reinstated and appointed at the coronation,3 Sept 1189, to carry one of the swords of state. He appears as attesting a charter to the monks of Canterbury, 1 Dec 1189, but then went on pilgrimage to Palestine, and died in Greece, on his way back, 1190. This earl was know as robert (es) Blanchesmains. Copies of his charters to his burgeses of Leicester will be found on pp 36 and 44 of Mr Thompson's 'Essay on Municipal History.' He married Petronila ('Parnel'), heiress of the house of Grantmesnil, who is said to have brought him the honour of Hinckley (Leicester), but it is possible that he may have inherited it from his grandfather. His son and heir Robert (Fitz-Parnel) was invested with the earldom of Leicester by Richard at Messina, early in 1191, and having distinguished himself in the crusade and been subsequently captured by the king of France in 1193, while defending Rouen for Richard, and liberated in 1196, died childless in 1204. Of this Robert's two younger brother, Roger was made bishop of St Andrew's in Scotland, 1189, and William (founder of St Leonard's at Leicester) was a leper.   "ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, Knt., nicknamed “ès Blanchemains,” 2nd Earl of Leicester, Steward of England and Normandy, seigneur of Bréteuil and Paci in Normandy, son and heir, born before 1135 (adult by 1153). He married before 1155/59 PERNEL DE GRANDMESNIL, daughter of Hugh de Grandmesnil, of Hinckley, Leicestershire. They had three sons, William, Robert [3rd Earl of Leicester], and Roger [Chancellor of Scotland, Bishop of Saint Andrew], and four daughters, Arnice, Margaret (or Margery), Hawise (nun), and Pernel. He witnessed charter of his father in the period, c.1150-60. In 1172 his Norman fees consisted of 81 knights' fees of the honour of Bréteuil and 40 knights' fees of the honour of Grandmesnil. In 1173 he joined the revolt of Young King Henry, son of King Henry II of England. His English estates were confiscated and the town of Leicester was taken and burnt. King Henry II himself marched on Bréteuil, and captured and burned the place in Sept. 1173. Robert landed in England from Flanders the same month, at the head of a force of Flemings, and being joined by Hugh le Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, they plundered Norwich and besieged and took the castle of Hagenet in October 1173. He and his wife were intercepted and taken prisoner at Fornham, near Bury St. Edmunds. In the king's treaty with Louis in Sept. 1174, provision was made for the earl's liberation. His castle of Leicester was demolished. His lands and honours were subsequently restored at the Council of Northampton in Jan. 1177, except for Mountsorrel Castle. He witnessed a charter of his cousin, Robert II, Count of Meulan, in 1180. In 1183 he was arrested and imprisoned with his brother-in-law, William, Earl of Gloucester. He was in attendence on the king at Christmas 1186. In 1189-90 he confirmed earlier grants to Nuneaton Priory made by Gervase Paynel, John de Cranford, and Roger Walensis. He attested a charter to the monks of Canterbury in 1189. He was present at the Coronation of King Richard I in 1189, where he carried one of the swords of state. A little after this ceremony, he departed for the Holy Land. Sometime before 1190 he confirmed the gifts of his parents to the leproserie of Bréteuil. He was a benefactor to the Abbey of Saint-Etienne of Caen, to that of Vaux-de-Cemai, to the Priories of Plessis-Grimoud and Sainte-Barbe in Auge, and also to the leproserie of Grand-Beaulieu in Chartres. At an unknown date, he granted the tithe of the fish in his fishponds at Groby, Leicestershire to Nuneaton Priory. At an unknown date, he granted one bovate of land in Groby, Leicestershire to his sister, Isabel, Countess of Northampton, which sometime in or after 1190, she gave to Nuneaton Priory with the provision that the service due be rendered to the earl of Leicester and his heirs. At an unknown date, he granted Saint-Etienne Abbey for the health of the soul of his wife, Countess Pernel, the right to have a turner in his forest of Bréteuil. SIR ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 2nd Earl of Leicester, died at sea near Brindisi or in Rumania on the way to Jerusalem 31 August 1190, and was buried in Durazzo, Greece. In 1203 the king remitted to his widow, Pernel, the sum of 55 marks argent owed to Aaron, a Jew in Lincoln. In 1204 Pernel proffered 3,000 marks to have possession of Leicester, with its appurtenances, and for those fees which belonged to the honour of Grandmesnil. Saher de Quincy made counter-proffers and defeated Pernel's aims. Pernel, Countess of Leicester, died 1 April 1212.

  ii. ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 3rd Earl of Leicester, 2nd but eldest surviving son and heir. He married LORETTE DE BREWES (or BRAOSE), daughter of William de Brewes. They had no issue. Sometime after 1190 he granted six virgates of land in Wyken near Hinkley, Leicestershire to Nuneaton Priory, in exchange for the land of Bernard of Waltham in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire. He was invested with the earldom of Leicester by King Richard I at Messina in 1191. He was captured by Philippe Auguste, King of France in 1193, while defending Rouen. Following King Philippe's conquest of Paci in Normandy in 1194 (which was confirmed by treaty by King Richard I in 1195-6), Earl Robert, who was then a captive, was forced to cede Paci as a ransom. He made two futile attempts in 1198 to recover Paci in Normandy. In 1203-4 he granted the church of Lincoln and William, Bishop of Lincoln, 16 virgates of land in Thurmaston, with his capital messuage in the same village, in augmentation of the exchange assigned for the manor of Leicester. In 1204 he and William Marshal were sent as ambassadors to negotiate a truce with King Philippe Auguste of France. ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 3rd Earl of Leicester, died 20 October 1204.   Died in 1190 at Durazzo, Greece (present day Durrës in Albania on the Adriatic Sea) on his return journey from Jerusalem.
  Unlike his forebears who had enhanced their fortunes by adherance to the Crown, Robert followed a rebellious course. He supported Henry the Young King when he revolted against his father, King Henry (II) Curtmantle in 1173. He seems to have been in and out of trouble for the next ten or fifteen years; but by September 3, 1189 he was present at the Coronation of King Richard (I) where he carried one of the Swords of State. In December 1189 he set out on a Crusade to Jerusalem and he died on the way back.
  Robert married Pernel (Petronilla) de Grandmesnil , and they had the following children:
  William de Bréteuil who died before his father.
  Robert Fitz Pernel, eldest surviving son and heir. He was known as Robert de Bréteuil during his father's lifetime and later as Robert Fitz Pernel. He d.s.p. (died without issue)

  Robert was the only son of Robert, second earl of Leicester, and Amice (daughter of Ralph de Gael). He was born after a number of elder sisters. He inherited from his father large estates in England and Normandy.
  
  After 1154 he seems to have spent much of his time in charge of the Leicester lands in Normandy. By 1159 he had received from the king the marriage of Petronilla, daughter & heir of William de Grandmesnil.
  
  The seal he used before his father's death demonstrates that he had taken the surname de Breteuil. This has some significance in that it reveals him stressing his descent from William fitz Osbern.
  
  Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester (1168–1190) was an English nobleman, one of the principal followers of Henry the Young King in the Revolt of 1173–1174 against his father Henry II. He is also called Robert Blanchemains (meaning "White Hands" in French) and Robert Harcourt. Lord High Steward 1168–1190 [1].
  
  When the revolt of the younger Henry broke out in April 1173, Robert went to his castle at Breteuil in Normandy. The rebels' aim was to take control of the duchy, but Henry II himself led an army to besiege the castle; Robert fled, and the Breteuil was taken on September 25 or 26.
  
  Robert apparently went to Flanders, where he raised a large force of mercenaries, and landed at Walton, Suffolk, on 29 September 1173. He joined forces with Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, and the two marched west, aiming to cut England in two across the Midlands and to relieve the king's siege of Robert's castle at Leicester. However, they were intercepted by the king's supporters and defeated in battle at Fornham, near Bury St Edmunds, on 17 October. Robert, along with his wife and many others, was taken prisoner, according to legend, by Sir William Chamberlayne, Lord of North Riston and Petsoe. Henry II took away the earl's lands and titles as well.
  
  He remained in captivity until January 1177, well after most of the other prisoners had been released. The king was in a strong position and could afford to be merciful; not long after his release Robert's lands and titles were restored, but not his castles. All but two of his castles had been destroyed, and those two (Montsorrel in Leicestershire and Pacy in Normandy) remained in the king's hands.
  
  Robert had little influence in the remaining years of Henry II's reign, but was restored to favour by Richard I. He carried one of the swords of state at Richard's coronation in 1189.
  
  Robert took part in the third crusade and died at Durazzo (others say Dyrrachium), in 1190, probably at the end of August. He was buried in Leicester Abbey.

  - Robert, who succeeded him as earl,
  - Roger, who was elected bishop of St Andrews in 1189.

  ROBERT, EARL OF LEICESTER, and Steward of England and of Normandy, styled ès Blanchemains, only son and heir. He first appears in 1153, when he received a charter from Henry, son of the Empress, "restoring" to him the lands then held by
  Robert's father, with all the lands which William de Paci held in England and in Normandy, and granting him the Dapifership of England and of Normandy. The charter is similar to one given at the same time to his father the Earl. About five
  years after his succession he appears to have refused to accept the old composition for the third penny of the pleas of the county, claiming that he ought to have the increased sum now paid for it. Unlike his predecessors, who had augmented
  their fortunes by adherence to the Crown, Robert took a rebellious course soon after he succeeded his father, by espousing the cause of the "young King" Henry, son of Henry II, when he revolted in 1173. The King at once confiscated Robert's

  Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and their combined forces plundered Norwich, and took the castle of Hagenet on 13 October. Thence he started for Leicester, where his castle still held out, but on 17 October he encountered the King's forces under
  Richard de Luci ("the loyal") at Fornham, near Bury (Suffolk), and in the fight that ensued was completely defeated, and captured with his Countess. They were sent to the King in Normandy, who imprisoned them at Falaise, and on his return to
  England, 8 July 1174, took them with him. The seneschal of Leicester Castle having begun to ravage the neighbouring country, Henry extorted from Robert the surrender, 31 July, of his strongholds of Leicester, Mount Sorrel and Groby. The Earl
  and Countess were taken back to Normandy on 8 August, but the treaty of peace between the King and his sons, 30 September 1174, stipulated for their release. Henry, however, demolished Leicester Castle. The rebellion having been crushed, Robert
  was no longer a menace, and in January 1176/7, at the Council of Northampton, had restored to him all his castles except Mount Sorrel. He crossed to Normandy that summer, and is said to have gone on pilgrimage in 1179, but no more is heard of
  him until the spring of 1183, when he was once more under suspicion, for he was arrested and imprisoned, together with his brother-in-law, the Earl of Gloucester. He was, however, in favour again and with the Court at Christmas 1186 at
  Guildford. At the Coronation of Richard I, 3 September 1189, he carried one of the Swords of State. On 1 December following he witnessed a charter to the monks at Canterbury, and then set out on Crusade to Jerusalem, and died on the way back.

  He married, before 1155-1159 (e), Pernel (Petronilla), heiress of the Norman honour of Grandmesnil, great-granddaughter of Hugh de Grandmesnil, the Domesday tenant, but her parentage has not been discovered. Robert died on his return journey
  from Jerusalem, 31 August 1190, at sea near Brindisi, or in Romania on his way to Jerusalem. His widow had a grant of the market and bridge at Ware for life, 10 March 1207/8. She died 1 April 1212.

  Robert de Beaumont is first mentioned in 1153. He received a charter making him "dapifer" of England and Normandy and a gift of lands formerly owned by William de Paci. In 1173 he supported Prince Henry in his revolt against his father, Henry II, and as a result the King confiscated Beaumont's English properties and burned the town of Leicester. At the time Robert was in Normandy in his fortress of Breteuil. The King appeared before Breteuil and captured and burned it. Robert fled before the siege began. He returned to England with a force of Flemish mercenaries and joined forces with Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk. Their combined forces plundered Norwich, but they were defeated and captured at Fornham, Suffolk. Robert de Beaumont and his wife were taken to Normandy where they were imprisoned at Falaise. They negotiated peace, but not before Leicester Castle was destroyed.
  
  Robert de Beaumont is said to have gone a pilgrimage in 1179. In 1183 he was once more under suspicion and imprisoned. Again he was restored to favor and in 1189 carried one of the Swords of State at the coronation of Richard I.   Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester (died 1190) was an English nobleman, one of the principal followers of Henry the Young King in the Revolt of 1173?1174 against his father Henry II. He is also called Robert Blanchemains (meaning "White Hands" in French).
  
  He was the son of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, a staunch supporter of Henry II, and he inherited from his father large estates in England and Normandy.
  
  When the revolt of the younger Henry broke out in April 1173, Robert went to his castle at Breteuil in Normandy. The rebels' aim was to take control of the duchy, but Henry II himself led an army to besiege the castle; Robert fled, and the Breteuil was taken on September 25 or 26.
  
  Robert apparently went to Flanders, where he raised a large force of mercenaries, and landed at Walton, Suffolk, on 29 September 1173. He joined forces with Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk, and the two marched west, aiming to cut England in two across the Midlands and to relieve the king's siege of Robert's castle at Leicester. However, they were intercepted by the king's supporters and defeated in battle at Fornham, near Bury St Edmunds, on 17 October. Robert, along with his wife and many others, was taken prisoner. Henry II took away the earl's lands and titles as well.
  
  He remained in captivity until January 1177, well after most of the other prisoners had been released. The king was in a strong position and could afford to be merciful; not long after his release Robert's lands and titles were restored, but not his castles. All but two of his castles had been destroyed, and those two (Montsorrel in Leicestershire and Pacy in Normandy) remained in the king's hands.
  
  Robert had little influence in the remaining years of Henry II's reign, but was restored to favor by Richard I. He carried one of the swords of state at Richard's coronation in 1189. In 1190 Robert went on the third crusade to Palestine, but he died at Dyrrachium on his return journey.

  Robert de Beaumont, Earl of Leicester (d 1190), baronial leader, was son of Robert de Beaumont, earl of Leicester, who died in 1168. He joined the rebellion against Henry II in favour of Prince Henry, which broke out in April 1173, and having obtained permission to visit Normandy, shut himself up in his castle of Breteuil. His English fiefs were confiscated in consequence, and an army sent against his town of Leicester, which was taken and burnt (28 july), with the exception of the castle, after a seige of three weeks. Henry II himself marched on Breteuil, 8 Aug, and (the earl having fled before him) captured and burnt the place on 25-6 Sept 1173. The earl is said to have been present at Gisors during the gruitles negotiations between the two kings, and to have upbraided Henry with his grievous losses. But this seems incompatible with the fact that he landed from Flanders, at Walton, Suffolk, 29 Sept 1173, at the head of a force of Flemings, and having been joined by Hugh (Bigo), earl of Norfolk, plundered Norwich, and besieged and took the castle of Hagenet on 13 Oct. Setting out for Leicester, he was intercepted at Fornahm, near Bury St Edmunds, by Richard de Luci and other supporters of the king (17 Oct), and taked prisioner, with his wife. They were sent over to Henry and imprisoned by him at Falaise, till his return to England, 8 July 1174, when he brought them with him. Meanwhile the earl's eastellan had broken forth from Leicester, and ravaged the country round, and Henry now (31 July 1174) extorted the surrender of his castles, Leicester, Mountsorrel, and Groby. The king took his prisoners back with him to Normandy on 8 August, but by the treaty with Louis on 30 Sept 1174, the earl's liberation was provided for. His castle of Leicester was, however, demolished, and it was not till January 1177 that in the council of Northampton he was restored in blood and honours, and his castles (except Mountsorrel( returned to him. He accompanied the king to Normandy in the summer, but is not again heard of till the spring of 1183, when, with the earl of Gloucester, he was arrested and imprisoned. He was, however, in attendance on the king at Christmas 1186, when he kept his court at Guildford, and on the accession of Richard (July 1189) he was completely reinstated and appointed at the coronation,3 Sept 1189, to carry one of the swords of state. He appears as attesting a charter to the monks of Canterbury, 1 Dec 1189, but then went on pilgrimage to Palestine, and died in Greece, on his way back, 1190. This earl was know as robert (es) Blanchesmains. Copies of his charters to his burgeses of Leicester will be found on pp 36 and 44 of Mr Thompson's 'Essay on Municipal History.' He married Petronila ('Parnel'), heiress of the house of Grantmesnil, who is said to have brought him the honour of Hinckley (Leicester), but it is possible that he may have inherited it from his grandfather. His son and heir Robert (Fitz-Parnel) was invested with the earldom of Leicester by Richard at Messina, early in 1191, and having distinguished himself in the crusade and been subsequently captured by the king of France in 1193, while defending Rouen for Richard, and liberated in 1196, died childless in 1204. Of this Robert's two younger brother, Roger was made bishop of St Andrew's in Scotland, 1189, and William (founder of St Leonard's at Leicester) was a leper. The great inheritance of the earls of Leicester consequently passed, through his two sisters, to the houses of de Montfort and de Quenci. [Dictionary of National Biography II:67-68]

  Died in 1190 at Durazzo, Greece (present day Durrës in Albania on the Adriatic Sea) on his return journey from Jerusalem.
  Unlike his forebears who had enhanced their fortunes by adherance to the Crown, Robert followed a rebellious course. He supported Henry the Young King when he revolted against his father, King Henry (II) Curtmantle in 1173. He seems to have been in and out of trouble for the next ten or fifteen years; but by September 3, 1189 he was present at the Coronation of King Richard (I) where he carried one of the Swords of State. In December 1189 he set out on a Crusade to Jerusalem and he died on the way back.
  Robert married Pernel (Petronilla) de Grandmesnil , and they had the following children:

  "ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, Knt., nicknamed “ès Blanchemains,” 2nd Earl of Leicester, Steward of England and Normandy, seigneur of Bréteuil and Paci in Normandy, son and heir, born before 1135 (adult by 1153). He married before 1155/59 PERNEL DE GRANDMESNIL, daughter of Hugh de Grandmesnil, of Hinckley, Leicestershire. They had three sons, William, Robert [3rd Earl of Leicester], and Roger [Chancellor of Scotland, Bishop of Saint Andrew], and four daughters, Arnice, Margaret (or Margery), Hawise (nun), and Pernel. He witnessed charter of his father in the period, c.1150-60. In 1172 his Norman fees consisted of 81 knights' fees of the honour of Bréteuil and 40 knights' fees of the honour of Grandmesnil. In 1173 he joined the revolt of Young King Henry, son of King Henry II of England. His English estates were confiscated and the town of Leicester was taken and burnt. King Henry II himself marched on Bréteuil, and captured and burned the place in Sept. 1173. Robert landed in England from Flanders the same month, at the head of a force of Flemings, and being joined by Hugh le Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, they plundered Norwich and besieged and took the castle of Hagenet in October 1173. He and his wife were intercepted and taken prisoner at Fornham, near Bury St. Edmunds. In the king's treaty with Louis in Sept. 1174, provision was made for the earl's liberation. His castle of Leicester was demolished. His lands and honours were subsequently restored at the Council of Northampton in Jan. 1177, except for Mountsorrel Castle. He witnessed a charter of his cousin, Robert II, Count of Meulan, in 1180. In 1183 he was arrested and imprisoned with his brother-in-law, William, Earl of Gloucester. He was in attendence on the king at Christmas 1186. In 1189-90 he confirmed earlier grants to Nuneaton Priory made by Gervase Paynel, John de Cranford, and Roger Walensis. He attested a charter to the monks of Canterbury in 1189. He was present at the Coronation of King Richard I in 1189, where he carried one of the swords of state. A little after this ceremony, he departed for the Holy Land. Sometime before 1190 he confirmed the gifts of his parents to the leproserie of Bréteuil. At an unknown date, he granted one bovate of land in Groby, Leicestershire to his sister, Isabel, Countess of Northampton, which sometime in or after 1190, she gave to Nuneaton Priory with the provision that the service due be rendered to the earl of Leicester and his heirs. At an unknown date, he granted Saint-Etienne Abbey for the health of the soul of his wife, Countess Pernel, the right to have a turner in his forest of Bréteuil. SIR ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 2nd Earl of Leicester, died at sea near Brindisi or in Rumania on the way to Jerusalem 31 August 1190, and was buried in Durazzo, Greece. In 1203 the king remitted to his widow, Pernel, the sum of 55 marks argent owed to Aaron, a Jew in Lincoln. In 1204 Pernel proffered 3,000 marks to have possession of Leicester, with its appurtenances, and for those fees which belonged to the honour of Grandmesnil. Saher de Quincy made counter-proffers and defeated Pernel's aims. Pernel, Countess of Leicester, died 1 April 1212.

  ii. ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 3rd Earl of Leicester, 2nd but eldest surviving son and heir. He married LORETTE DE BREWES (or BRAOSE), daughter of William de Brewes. They had no issue. Sometime after 1190 he granted six virgates of land in Wyken near Hinkley, Leicestershire to Nuneaton Priory, in exchange for the land of Bernard of Waltham in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire. He was invested with the earldom of Leicester by King Richard I at Messina in 1191. He was captured by Philippe Auguste, King of France in 1193, while defending Rouen. Following King Philippe's conquest of Paci in Normandy in 1194 (which was confirmed by treaty by King Richard I in 1195-6), Earl Robert, who was then a captive, was forced to cede Paci as a ransom. He made two futile attempts in 1198 to recover Paci in Normandy. In 1203-4 he granted the church of Lincoln and William, Bishop of Lincoln, 16 virgates of land in Thurmaston, with his capital messuage in the same village, in augmentation of the exchange assigned for the manor of Leicester. In 1204 he and William Marshal were sent as ambassadors to negotiate a truce with King Philippe Auguste of France. ROBERT DE BRÉTEUIL, 3rd Earl of Leicester, died 20 October 1204.    Page: Robert de Beaumont, II Earl of Leicester founded a priory at Leme, or Le Desert, in the forest of Breteuil in 1125. He also founded a hospital in the town of Breteuil before 1141. I am attaching this source to show the connection of this family to the town of Breteuil. He married about 1158 and had 2 children by 1164. One of his sons was Robert de Breteuil, III Earl of Leicester. All of the sons of Robert de Breteuil used Breteuil as their surname. Although the infant son that was buried at Le Desert in the forest of Breteuil was not given a first name, it is known that he was the son of Robert de Breteuil, III Earl of Leicester as his grandfather died in 1118, when de Breteuil was 14 years old, still in his minority. Robert de Breteuil did not become Earl until he reached his majority, by 1119/1120 as he is listed as Earl Robert on a ship's manifest in 1120.

    Note: Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester (died 1190) was an English nobleman, one of the principal followers of Henry the Young King in the Revolt of 1173–1174 against his father Henry II. He is also called Robert Blanchemains (meaning "White Hands" in French). He was the son of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester, a staunch supporter of Henry II, and he inherited from his father large estates in England and Normandy. In 1190 Robert went on the Third Crusade to Palestine, but he died at Dyrrachium on his return journey. Robert married Petronilla, who was a daughter of William de Grandmesnil and great-granddaughter and eventual heiress to the English lands of Domesday baron, Hugh de Grandmesnil. They had five children.
