=== Life Sketch ===
Afonso I, also called Afonso Henriques, byname Afonso the Conqueror, Portuguese Afonso o Conquistador (born 1109/11, Guimarães, Port.—died Dec. 6, 1185, Coimbra) the first king of Portugal (1139–85), who conquered Santarém and Lisbon from the Muslims (1147) and secured Portuguese independence from Leon (1139).
Alfonso VI, emperor of Leon, had granted the county of Portugal to Afonso’s father, Henry of Burgundy, who successfully defended it against the Muslims (1095–1112). Henry married Alfonso VI’s illegitimate daughter, Teresa, who governed Portugal from the time of her husband’s death (1112) until her son Afonso came of age. She refused to cede her power to Afonso, but his party prevailed in the Battle of São Mamede, near Guimarães (1128). Though at first obliged as a vassal to submit to his cousin Alfonso VII of Leon, Afonso assumed the title of king in 1139.
By victory in the Battle of Ourique (1139) he was able to impose tribute on his Muslim neighbours; and in 1147 he further captured Santarém and, availing himself of the services of passing crusaders, successfully laid siege to Lisbon. He carried his frontiers beyond the Tagus River, annexing Beja in 1162 and Évora in 1165; in attacking Badajoz, he was taken prisoner but then released. He married Mafalda of Savoy and associated his son, Sancho I, with his power. By the time of his death he had created a stable and independent monarchy." -Encyclopedia Britannica

Afonso I, also called AFONSO HENRIQUES, byname AFONSO THE CONQUEROR,Portuguese AFONSO O CONQUISTADOR (b. 1109/11, Guimarães, Port.--d. Dec.6, 1185, Coimbra), the first king of Portugal (1139-85), who conqueredSantarém and Lisbon from the Muslims (1147) and secured Portugueseindependence from Leon (1139).
Alfonso VI, emperor of Leon, had granted the county of Portugal toAfonso's father, Henry of Burgundy, who successfully defended it againstthe Muslims (1095-1112). Henry married Alfonso VI's illegitimatedaughter, Teresa, who governed Portugal from the time of her husband'sdeath (1112) until her son Afonso came of age. Afonso was proclaimed soleruler of Portugal in 1128, but Teresa refused to cede her power toAfonso. His party prevailed in the Battle of São Mamede, near Guimarães(1128) and he defeated his mother's troops near Guimarães, making her atthe same time his prisoner. Though at first obliged as a vassal to submitto his cousin Alfonso VII of Leon, Afonso assumed the title of king in1139.
He also vanquished Alphonso Raymond of Castile, his mother's ally, andthus freed Portugal from dependence on the crown of Leon. Next turninghis arms against the Moors, he obtained on July 26, 1139, the victory ofOurique, and immediately after was proclaimed king by his soldiers. Heasembled the Cortes of the kingdom at Lamego, where he received the crownfrom the archbishop of Braganza; the assembly also declared that Portugalwas no longer a dependency of Leon. Alphonso wrested from the MoorsSantarém in 1146, and in 1147 he further captured and, availing himselfof the services of passing crusaders, successfully laid siege to Lisbon.He carried his frontiers beyond the Tagus River, annexing Beja in 1162and Évora in 1165; in attacking Badajoz, he was taken prisoner but thenreleased. and in 1167 he was made prisoner by the soldiers of the king ofLeon, and was obliged to surrender as his ransom almost all the conquestshe had made in Galicia. In 1184, in spite of his great age, he had stillsufficient energy to relieve his son, Sancho, who was besieged inSantarém by the Moors. He died shortly after. He married Mafalda of Savoyand associated his son, Sancho I, with his power. By the time of hisdeath in 1185, he had created a stable and independent monarchy. Alphonsowas a man of gigantic stature, being, according to some authors, 7 ft.tall. He is revered as a saint by the Portuguese, both on account of hispersonal character and as the founder of their kingdom. [EncyclopaediaBritannica CD '97]

After his father's death (1112), his mother, Countess Teresa, ruled thecounty of Portugal with the help of her Spanish lover, Fernando Pèrez.In 1128 young Alfonso, who had allied himself with discontented nobles,defeated her in battle and drove her into León with Pèrez (Alfonso didnot, despite the popular legend, put her in chains at Guimaraes).Beginning as little more than a quasi-independent guerrilla chief,Alfonso spent his life in almost ceaseless fighting against the kings ofLeón and Castile and against the Moors to increase his prestige and histerritories. In 1139 he defeated the Moors in the battle of Ourique(fought not at Ourique, but at some undetermined place). In 1147 he tookSantarém by surprise attack and, with the help of the English, Flemish,and German crusaders, captured Lisbon. He began to style himself king in1139, and in 1143, by the Treaty of Zamora, he placed his lands underpapal protection and secured Castilian recognition of his title, whichwas confirmed (1179) by Pope Alexander III. Alfonso's son Sancho Iascended an established throne. Sources: swilliams10. Type: Book. Author: Weis, Frederick Lewis. Alfonso was but three years of age when his father died, and so his mother ruled Portugal until he came of age in 1128. As an infant he inherited his father's title, and at age 16 he removed his mother as regent. At 18 he began what was to be a nine year struggle for independence from Leon. He won this war in 1139 on July 215 in a decisive victory over the Moors at Qurique, Portugal, and proclaimed himself King of Portugal. With the aid of English crusaders enroute to the Holy Land, he captured Lisbon from the Moors in Oct 1147. Between 1165 and 1168 he captured such strongholds as Evora, Moura, Serpa, Juromenha, Alconchel, Trujillo, Caceres and part of Badzjoz with troops led by Geraldo. But when Geralldo and Alfonso were attempting to capture the citadel at Badajoz, the Portuguese King was thrown from his horse and crippled with a broken leg. He was taken prisoner by Ferdinand II of Catile who at the time was fighting in alliance with the Arabs. In 1171 he captured Santarem but because of his injuries his military career was basically over. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers to the wife of "Aldefonsus rex Portugallie" as "filia comitis Sabaudie" but does not name her[211]. The De Rebus Hispaniæ of Rodericus Ximenes records the marriage of "Aldefonsum" and "Mafaldam filiam Comitis Maurienæ"[212]. The Chronicon Lusitanum records the marriage in 1183 (1145) of “Rex Donnus Alfonsus” and “Donnam Matildam, Comitis Amadæi de Moriana filiam”, adding that they had three sons and three daughters[213]. Brandaõ quotes a charter of the king dated 1146 which records “anno...quo duxeramt Mahaldam” and a charter dated Jul 1146 in which he records a donation “cum uxore mea Regina Dona Mafalda”[214]. It is likely that Mathilde was the daughter of Comte Amedée III's first marriage, although no proof has been found that this is correct. As she gave birth to her first child in 1147[215], it is improbable that she was the daughter of Comte Amedée III's marriage with Mathilde d'Albon for the same reasons of chronology as explained above.
