=== After Llewelyn Fawr had hanged Eva's hus ===
After Llewelyn Fawr had hanged Eva's husband, William, he wrote letterstoher and her brother, William, Earl of Pembroke. He was enquiring whetherthe marriage between his son, Dafydd, and Isabella de Braose should stillgo ahead. Evidently they agreed that it should. Nevertheless Llewelynand Dafydd were never satisfied with the distribution of William's landsamong his four heiresses and this led to further armed conflicts in themarches. Eva continued to hold Braose lands and castles in her own right after thedeath of her husband. Dugdale mentions her as holder of Totnes in 1230.It is recorded in the Close Rolls (1234-7) that Henry III granted 12marks to her to strengthen the castle at Hay. 'Aenor de Totnes
...(note that in an earlier post to SGM, which I source, JohnRavilious does not have Aenor as her first name.)
***********************
Apparently in John's 12 Feb 2003 msg to SGM, he was unaware that CPI:21, CP X:706, Holloway p4, Sanders p104-5, Watney p145, Weis AR7177:5 all name her Aenor and Turton p. 78 named her Ainor.
The flwg is from Sanders, I.J., _ ENGLISH BARONIES A STUDY OF THEIRORIGIN AND DESCENT 1086-1132_, (Oxford University Press, London, firstpublished 1960, Reprinted lithographically, from corrected sheets ofthe first edition 1963), Part II Probable Baronies, p. 104-5.
BARNSTAPLE DEVON
The estates which Geoffrey de Mowbray, bishop of Countances, held whenDomesday Book was compiled formed the basis of the barony ofBarnstaple.[4.104] Geoffrey d. 1093, his lands passed to his nephewRobert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland, who lost his estates whenhe rebelled in 1095. The great majority of the lands in Devon passedto Juhel, Domesday lord of Totnes, some time before 1100.[5.104] Juhelwas living in 1123 but he d. ante 1130 when he was followed by his sonAlfred who d.s.p. ante 1139[6.104] possibly leaving an unnamed SISTERand a sister called Aenor.
One SISTER, who inherited half the barony, seems to have m. Henry deTracy, who was named with Barnstaple in 1139. Henry was living in 1147but some time before 1165 he was succeeded by his son Oliver.[7.104]Oliver d. circa 1184, his son Oliver II d. 1210 leaving Henry who in1213 was granted the Braose half of Barnstaple in addition to the halfwhich he had inherited.[8.104] Henry d. 1274, his heir was hisgranddaughter MAUD.
MAUD, who inherited the whole barony, d. ante Mich. 1279. She m.firstly, Nicholas fitz Martin d. 1260 of Blagdon, q.v., and secondly,Geoffrey de Camville d. 1308.[9.104-5] On Geoffrey's death Maud'slands passed to her son William I fitz Martin d. 1324. William II fitzMartin, s. and h., d.s.p. 1326. His heirs were his sister ELEANOR andthe son of his sister JOAN.
ELEANOR, who inherited half the barony, d.s.p. 1342. She m. firstly,William de Hastings d.v.p.s.p. 1311, son of John de Hastings d. 1313of Abergavenny. She m., secondly, Philip de Columbars d.s.p. 1342 ofNether Stowey, q.v.
JOAN, who inherited half the barony, d. 1322. She m. firstly, Henry,Earl of Lincoln, d. 1311. She m., secondly, Nicholas Audley d. 1316.James, s. and h., was given seizin of his lands in 1329. In 1343 heinherited the lands of his aunt Eleanor. He d. 1386.[1.105]
AENOR, who inherited half the barony, m. Philip de Braose d. 1134-55of Bramber. William II, s. and h., owed 1,000 silver marks in 1158 toobtain his share of Barnstaple.[2.105] William d. circa 1192-3; thelands of his son William III were confiscated by King John in 1208 andin 1213 his half of the honour of Barnstaple was granted to Henry deTracy, holder of the other half.[3.105]

[7.104] Idem, pp. 52, 135; _Monasticon_, v, p. 198; _Pipe Roll, 11Hen. II_, p. 81. Henry's name is not mentioned in the pipe rolls andthe first mention of Oliver is in 1165 when he owed 500 m. for hisshare of Barnstaple. This suggests that Henry had died in the reign ofStephen and that the lands had been seized into the hands of the king, who released them only after the payment of a heavy fine. In 1165Oliver was charged scutage on 25 knights' fees. In 1166 he recorded 21_de veteri_ and 2 ½ _de novo_ but in 1168 he was charged for 28knights' fees _de veteri_ and for 2 ½ _de novo_. Scutage was latercharged on 28-29 knights' fees (_Red Book_, p. 255; _Pipe Roll, 11Hen. II_, p. 80; idem, _14 Hen. II_, p. 128; idem, _8 Rich. Henry de Tracy heldthe barony by service of 2 knights or 4 sergeants for 40 days.Geoffrey de Camville held Maud's lands 'by service of a barony and afifth part of a barony'. See Great Torrington for the 'fifth part of abarony'. Henry de Tracy answered for 56 knights' fees in 1235-6. In1246 he was charged for 28 knights' fees of the honour of Barnstaple(the Braose half) and for 28 knights' fees of the honour of Oliver deTracy. The same charge was made on Geoffrey de Camville in 1279(_Fees_, p. 431; Pipe Roll, E. 372/90, Devon; idem, E. 372/123,Devon). Maud was da. and h. of Eve da. and h. of Henry de Tracy, byGuy de Brian of Laugharne, co. Carmarthen (G.E.C. iii, p. 4).

He stated in 1166 that he had 28 knights' fees enfeoffed _deveteri_ and the estate asnwered for this number later (_Red Book_, pp.258-9; _Pipe Roll, 11 Hen. II_, p. 80; idem, _14 Hen. [3.105] See Bramber; _C.R. 1204-24_, p. 137. In 1218 Reginald, thirdson of William, tried unsuccessfully to recover his father's rights inBarnstaple (idem, p. 376). See Totnes. In 1195 Oliver de Tracy andWilliam de Braose held negotiations about the tenure of Barnstaple(_Pipe Roll, 7 Rich. I_, pp. 111-12; _Abbrev. Plac._, p. 1).
If you need an expansion of Sander's source abbreviations, let meknow. Also note that Sander's de Tracy data differs significantly fromyours. That an unnamed dau. of Juhel, lord of Totnes, m. Henry deTracy is of course speculation but since his son Oliver paid scutageon the barony, it is probable.
Sanders on p89 under Totnes Devon also states about Aenor's fatherJuhel:
The estates which Juhel de Totnes held in Domesday Book later formedpart of the barony of Totnes.[4.89] It is stated that when William theConqueror died, in 1087, Juhel was expelled from Totnes, which wasgranted by William II to Roger I de Nonant. This finds support fromthe fact that in 1091 Roger's gift of the church of St. Mary, Totnes,to the abbey of SS. Sergius and Bacchus, Angers, was confirmed by theking; this was confirmed by King Henry I in 1102-5.[5.89]
[4.89] _V.C.H. Devon_, i, pp. 467-79. He is also called Juhel fitzAlfred or Juhel de Mayenne (_Monasticon_, iv, p. 630; idem, v, p. 198;_Regesta_, ii, no. 1391).
[5.89] Idem, no. 735a, p. 400; _Monasticon_, iv, p. 630. Roger Iwitnessed royal deeds in 1091, 1096, and in the first decade of thetwelfth century (_Regesta_, i, nos. 319, 377; idem, ii, _passim_). Itis claimed that Juhel was lord of Totnes in 1113, but the evidence ofthe connexion (sic) of Roger de Nonant with this town at the end ofthe eleventh century casts doubt on the truth of this claim (_FeudalEngland_, p. 486, no. 4).'
