  Roger de Somery inherited the feudal barony of Dudley in 1235. In 1262, Roger started the re-fortification of Dudley Castle, which had been slighted by order of King Henry II after a rebellion in 1173-1174. Roger married twice and died in 1272.
  
  Biography
  Roger de Somery was the son of Ralph de Somery (d 1210) and Margaret le Gras (liv 1247), feudal baron of Dudley.
  He inherited the barony in 1235. In 1253, the king sent Roger on an expedition to Gascony to help quell a rebellion. In 1262, Roger began to re-fortify Dudley Castle, which had been slighted by order of King Henry II after the revolt of 1173–74. However, as he did not have a licence from the king to rebuild the castle, he was ordered to stop the construction work. A licence was subsequently obtained and refortification resumed although the castle was not finished in his lifetime. Roger married twice, first to Nichola Albini (daughter of William de Albini) and secondly to Amabel Chacombe.
  He died in 1272.

His parentage is confirmed by a plea in Staffordshire dated 1240 which records that certain land was inherited from "Gervasio Paenel cuidam Hawisie sorori et heredi", from her by "…de iste Radulpho cuidam Willelmi et fratri et heredi, et de Willelmo cuidam Nicholao…filii et heredi, et de Nicholao isti Rogero ut avunculo quia non habuit heredem de corpore sua"[1343]. The Testa de Nevill lists fees in Berkshire, dated [1242/43], which include "Rogerus de Sumery in Bradefeld i. feodum...Margareta de Sumeri in Bradefeld unum feodum predicti Rogeri...Willelmus de Englefeld in Englefeld unum feodum de eodem feodo"[1344]. A writ dated 26 Aug "1 Edw I", after the death of "Roger de Somery" names "Roger his son aged 18 at the Nativity of St John the Baptist in the said year is his next heir", provides for "lands…whereof Lady Anabel late his wife ought to be dowered", and records details of "the inheritance of Nicholaa de Albiniaco his first wife"[1345].

Weis, "Ancestral Roots" (5th Edition, 1982), p. 50, gives as his parents John de Somery and wife Hawise de Paynell (sister of Gervase Paynell), who also had Ralph de Somery, Baron Somery. Roger died by 08-26-1273. With his second wife, Amabilia de Gilbert de Segrave, he had Roger de Someri (b. 06-24-1255, d. 10-11-1291), Baron Dudley in 1290, m. Agnes (d. 11-23-1308) - Roger and Agnes had Margaret de Someri who m. John de Sutton I, Lord of Dudley Castle in 1326 (son of Sir Richard de Sutton).

   Note: ROGER [IV] de Somery, son of RALPH [II] de Somery & his wife Margaret Crassus (-before 26 Aug 1273). "Rogeri de Sumery fratris Willelmi Percevall de Sumery" swore homage to the king for "terra quam predictus Willelmus Perceval de rege tenuit", adding that he was heir to “Nicholaus filius ipsius Willelmi”, dated 10 Jul 1229[1341]. An undated order, [28 Oct 1237/27 Oct 1238], records a fine made by “the men of Alrewas”, Shropshire, against “Roger de Somery their lord”[1342]. His parentage is confirmed by a plea in Staffordshire dated 1240 which records that certain land was inherited from "Gervasio Paenel cuidam Hawisie sorori et heredi", from her by "…de iste Radulpho cuidam Willelmi et fratri et heredi, et de Willelmo cuidam Nicholao…filii et heredi, et de Nicholao isti Rogero ut avunculo quia non habuit heredem de corpore sua"[1343].
