... The original descent of this illustrious family is variously deduced; but we shall begin with Herveius, who is unquestionably proved by sir James Ware, and William Roberts, esq. Ulster king of arms in the reign of king Charles I., to be the true and direct ancestor of this family. He accompanied the conqueror into England, and obtained large possessions there. He was succeeded by Herveius Walter, his son, having also a daughter Alicia, who m. Ormus Magnus. Herveius Walter (which continued continued the surname until disused by Edmund, earl of Carrick, when, according to the custom, the Christian name only was to be used with the title) m. Maud, eldest daughter of Theobald de Valoines, and had issue 5 sons; viz. Theobald, the 1st Butler in Ireland; Hubert, Walter, Roger, and Hamon-Hubert, 2d son, was b. at Dereham, in Norfolk, where he built a monastery, and encompassed the tower of London with a strong wall and a deep moat; became archhishop of Canterbury, and d. in July 1205."

However, the following charter indicates close connections between the Walter, Valoignes and Glanville families which appear best explained if Matilda was the sister of Bertha, wife of Ranulf de Glanville. “Herveus Walterus” donated “feodum meum in Wyngefeild...in Sikebroc...in Istede...” to Butley priory, Suffolk, for the souls of “meæ et Matildis sponsæ meæ et filiorum nostrorum...Ranulfi de Glanvil et Bertæ sponsæ et filiorum suorum”, by undated charter, witnessed by “Willielmo de Albervilla, Willielmo de Valoniis, Roberto de Valoniis...Willelmo de Glanvilla clerico et filiis meis Huberto, Waltero et Rogero et Hamone”[355].]
