=== Life Sketch ===
From Medieval Lands:
RAOUL de Lusignan "d'Exoudun", son of HUGUES [IX] de Lusignan & his wife [Orengarde ---] (-Melle 1 May 1219, bur Issoudun). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Radulfum de Esselduno qui fuit comes Augi" as "Hugo Brunus fratrem natu maiorem" (presumably an error for "minorem"), adding that "horum pater Hugo de Lisegnen" had "fratres…Gaufridum, Henricum regem Cypri et Guidonem regem Ierosolimorum"[1091]. "Maiorem" is presumably an error in this source for "minorem", or represents a transcription error: no scenario has been identified in which Raoul being the older brother is compatible with the other information relating to the Lusignan family. According to the Complete Peerage, "Esselduno" was "Exoudun, Deux-Sèvres, arrondissement Melle, canton La Mothe-Saint-Héray" not "Issoudun, Indre"[1092], although the editor of the Monumenta Germanica series states that the place was "Issoudun, départ. Indre"[1093]. Comte d'Eu, Seigneur d'Exoudun, de Melle, et de la Mothe-Saint-Héray. The date of the marriage and Raoul’s succession as count is uncertain. It must have taken place before 1194 when "comes de Auco" paid scutage on land in Sussex[1094]. "Radulfus Augensium comes" confirmed donations to Tréport, made by "antecessores mei comes…Robertus et Guillelmus filius eius et Henricus avus Henrici junioris et Johannes pater eiusdem Henrici et idem H.", by charter dated 1191[1095], indicating that the marriage took place some years earlier assuming that this document is correctly dated. The Annals of Burton record that “Warinus de Clapiun senescallus Normanniæ” besieged “castellum de Denecurt”, on the orders of John King of England, adding that King Richard had given the castle to “Radulpho de Ysoudun comiti de Aueo, fratri Hugonis le Brun”, but that the siege was lifted by Philippe King of France before the arrival of King John[1096]. The same passage is given by Roger of Hoveden[1097]. "Hugo Brunus comes Marchie", on leaving for Jerusalem, recommended "R. comiti Augi et Hugoni filio meo" to take the abbey of Châtelliers under their protection by charter dated to [1200][1098]. "Hugo Brun com March et Rad com Augi" swore homage to John King of England, dated 28 Jan 1200[1099]. Ralph of Coggeshall records that in 1202 John King of England made war against "comitem de Marchis…Hugonem cognomento Brun et fratrem eius comitem de Eu" who had rebelled against him "pro filia comitis Engolismi, quam Hugo prædictus prius affidaverat"[1100]. Seigneur de Civray et de Chizé: an order of King John dated 2 Nov 1202 refers to "gentes Com Augi de Siveray et de Chisie"[1101]. An order of King John dated 7 Nov 1202 granted safe passage for a visit to "R. com Augi"[1102]. "Comes Augi" pledged his lands for his homage to Philippe II King of France, and that of "fratres sui comes Marchie et vicecomes Castri Eraudi" dated (by Delisle) to [1209][1103]. His date of death is indicated by the following document: the mayor and commune of Niort wrote to King Henry III, dated Feb/Mar 1220 (O.S.?), notifying the death of certain persons including “le comte d’Eu, monseigneur Porteclie, messeigneurs Geoffroy du Taunay, A. de Rochefort, Pans de Mirebeau et monseigneur Ceebranz Chaboz” leaving heirs “qui sont en bas âge”[1104]. The necrology of Ulterioris Portus monastery records the death "1 May" of "Radulphus comes Augi"[1105].
m (1194) ALIX Ctss d'Eu, Lady of Hastings, daughter of HENRI II Comte d'Eu [Normandie] & his wife Mathilde de Warenne (-[13/15] May 1246). The Chronique des comtes d’Eu, written in 1390, names "Aalis et Jehanne" as the two daughters of "Henry et Mahault", adding in a later passage that Alix married "Radulphus de Yssouduno...filz du conte de la Marche mainsné" in 1200, and died in 1245 "à Villeneuve en Poitou en un sien lieu appelé la Mote"[1106]. “Haelisia comitissa Augy quondam uxor Radulfi de Ysondun comitis Augy” donated property to Roche Abbey, for the souls of “…Radulfi filii mei”, by undated charter witnessed by “domino Willielmo comite Warennæ avunculo meo…”[1107]. An order of King John dated 1 Apr 1202 relates intelligence that "filia Com. Aug…uxor Rad de Exoldun mortua est"[1108]. “A[lix] comitissa Augi” confirmed that she relinquished "terram de Forz…ex eschæta Guillelmi quondam domini de Forz et comitis Aubemarle" to Louis IX King of France by charter dated Feb 1233 (O.S.)[1109]. The necrology of Ulterioris Portus monastery records the death "14 May" of "Aelis...comitissa Augi"[1110].
Comte Raoul & his wife had four children: (Raoul, Guerin, Mathilde (Maud) and Jeanne).

Raoul I de Lusignan, d. 1 May 1219, Count d'Eu, brother of Hugh IX & son of Hugh died young (son of Hugh VIII, Sire de Lusignan & wife Bourgogne). [Ancestral Roots]
The above citation by AR indicates that Raoul is brother of Hugh IX, but not son of Hugh VIII, but the son of a recently discovered "Hugh died young" (but not too young to have fathered two sons, I name him Hugh VIII-1/2). CP and the German work "ES" which I don't have a copy of name him son of Hugh VIII. CP, which is a little outdated on this would still have him as brother of Hugh IX, while ES has him as uncle of Hugh IX, with Hugh IX being son of Hugh VIII-1/2. Following the postings on the newsgroup soc.genealogy.medieval, does not lead to a definite conclusion as to what the "experts" know about Raoul's parentage.
Given the fact that the experts are divided as to Raoul's parents, I feel somewhat justified in following the majority of the World Connect people in having Raoul's parents being Geoffrey & Humberge. I have no published source for this, indeed the sources say he was son of Hugh VIII or Hugh VIII-1/2, with many experts arguing that he was not a younger brother of Hugh IX because then Hugh IX would have taken the very lucrative marriage with Alice d'Eu instead of Raoul. Placing Raoul as son of Geoffrey makes him 1st cousin to Hugh IX.

=== Life Sketch ===

=== Issoudun, France ===
Issoudun (French pronunciation: [isudœ̃]) is a commune in the Indre department, administrative region of Centre-Val de Loire, France. It is also referred to as Issoundun, which is the ancient name.
It is a totally different place from Exoudun, Nouvelle, Aquitaine, France. Raoul d'Issoudun should not be confused with Raoul d'Exoudun - two different people!

=== Raoul's birth ===
From Medieval Lands:
RAOUL de Lusignan "d'Exoudun" ([1169]-Melle 1 May 1219, bur Exoudun). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Radulfum de Esselduno qui fuit comes Augi" as "Hugo Brunus fratrem natu maiorem" (presumably an error for "minorem"), adding that "horum pater Hugo de Lisegnen" had "fratres…Gaufridum, Henricum regem Cypri et Guidonem regem Ierosolimorum"[373]. "Maiorem" is presumably an error in this source for "minorem", or represents a transcription error: no scenario has been identified in which Raoul being the older brother is compatible with the other information relating to the Lusignan family. Raoul was not named in his father’s charter dated 12 Nov 1166, suggesting that he was born later. As the charter dated 1168 names Douce as wife of "Hugo de Lusignan", who can probably be identified as Hugues [IX], it is likely that Raoul from this supposed second marriage, after his supposed sister Alamanda. If this hypothesis is correct, Raoul must have been born in 1169, maybe posthumously.

Note: RAOUL de Lusignan "d'Exoudun", son of HUGUES [IX] de Lusignan & his wife [Orengarde ---] (-Melle 1 May 1219, bur Issoudun).

Note: Raoul I of Lusignan (born c. 1160/5 – Melle, 1 May 1219) was the second son of Hugh de Lusignan (d. 1169) and the grandson of Hugh VIII of Lusignan. He was a prominent nobleman in the region of Poitou, and lord (seigneur) d'Exoudun, de Melle, de Chizé, de Civray and de La Mothe. He also became Count of Eu (c. 1191), by marriage (de jure uxoris) to Alix d'Eu. Since the region of Poitou was contested between kings of France and England, local nobility was often changing sides. Up to 1201, Raoul was loyal to kings of England, but than changed his allegiance to king of France. He later rejoined the English side, and took part in the Battle of Bouvines (1214). For his services to the king England, he was granted possession of Hastings and Tickhill, in 1216. Earlier, he participated, as a young knight, in the Third Crusade, and later again in the Fifth Crusade, and died upon return. He was buried at the Priory of Fontblanche, in Exoudun.[1][2][3][4]
Family
By 1191, Raoul married a young noblewoman Alix d'Eu, heiress of the County of Eu (born c. 1180 – La Mothe-Saint-Heray, Poitou, May 1246).[5]
They had several children, including:
Raoul II de Lusignan, Count of Eu (c. 1200 – 1246)[6]
Matilda de Lusignan (c. 1210 – 14 August 1241), who married Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of Hereford, 1st Earl of Essex and Constable of England. She was buried at Llanthony, Gloucester. They were ancestors to Queen Catherine Parr.[5]
As lord of Exoudun, he is known as: Raoul d'Exoudun, and should not be confused with a contemporary nobleman, Raoul of Issoudun (Raoul d'Issoudun), who was married to Margaret of Courtenay.
