Biography
"Sir Ralph Daubeney, of South Ingleby, South Petherton, &c., son and heir, born 3 Mar. 1304/5. On 2 July 1323 the King notified to the Duke of Brittany, the Bishop of Dol, and all others, that Ralph was heir of Elis [his deceased father]. Having proved his age, the King took his homage, and he had livery of his father's lands, 21 June 1326. Was knighted and had robes as a banneret, 16 Jan. 1326/7. He was summoned for military service against the Scots 27 Mar. (1335) 9 Edw. III, and to a Council, 25 Feb. (1341/2) 16 Edw. III., by writs directed Radulfo Daubeny or Daubeney. He was taken prisoner by the Scots, and was not released until after 6 Oct. 1337. Was in the King's division at the Battle of Crecy, being in the retinue of the Bishop of Durham, and was at the seige of Calais in the retinue of the Earl of Huntingdon. He married, 1stly, before 27 Jan. 1332/3, Alice, 1st daughter of Sir William Montagu, of Shepton Montague [Lord Montagu], by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Piers de Montfort, of Beaudesert, co. Warwick. He married secondly, before 8 Feb. 1345/6, third sister and in her issue coheir of Thomas de Thweng, clerk, of Thwing and Kilton, co. York, and daughter of Sir Marmaduke de Thweng [Lord Thweng], by Isabel, daughter of Sir William de Ros, of Ingmanthorpe, in that county. She died between 20 Apr. 1364 and 28 May 1374. He was living 18 August 1371, and (it is stated) in Dec. 1378." [1]
"He was not summoned to Parliament. He fought in Scotland and was taken prisoner by the Scots, but was released in 1337. He fought at the Battle of Crécy 26 August 1346 and at the siege of Calais in 1347. He was married (1st) before 27 Jan. 1332/3 to Alice de Montagu, daughter of William de Montagu, 2nd Lord Montagu, by Elizabeth, daughter of Peter de Montfort, Knt., of Beaudesert, Warwickshire.
